Job description

Introduction

McKenney’s has been going strong for more than seven decades. Our culture values people and ideas, and we work together to deliver the most innovative solutions to our customers. We help you grow in your career through training and support, and as an equal opportunity employer, we provide comprehensive benefits and give you a firm foundation for the future.

Overview

The Mechanical Systems Designer will work directly with members of our Engineering Team to prepare design and shop drawings aligned with McKenney’s drafting standards that support our design and construction teams. You'll prepare construction package drawings for HVAC, Mechanical Piping, and Plumbing for facilities, including dimensioned plans, sections, details, equipment schedules, and control diagrams. You’ll receive project assignments from the project lead engineer and work with field personnel, project managers, cooperative education students, and other CAD professionals to perform project-related tasks. We’ll lean on you to collaborate with related disciplines and designers from other disciplines to create high-quality multi-disciplinary drawing packages for issues to clients.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize project criteria, applicable building and industry codes, McKenney’s CAD standards, and BIM execution plans (where applicable) to create accurate mechanical and plumbing drawings consistent with both company and project requirements.
  • Create three-dimensional (and single-line/2D) CAD models of HVAC/sheet metal duct, piping, and plumbing systems for the purpose of design, coordination, and fabrication of said systems.
  • Coordinate all duct, piping, and plumbing and access requirements with other building trades, walls, ceilings, other architectural and structural elements, etc., to avoid installation and access conflicts in the field.
  • Work directly with engineers, co-op students, and other designers to accurately model HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems from verbal and written descriptions, sketches, existing drawings, and electronic images.
  • Effectively and proactively communicate with engineers, project managers, and field foremen during the drafting and construction process. This includes identifying and communicating deficiencies/challenges with proposed solutions and scheduling progress on a timely basis (weekly at a minimum).
  • Attend coordination meetings and communicate with other trades to develop highly coordinated models.
  • Perform file management functions such as posting models, downloading model updates, managing links, and historic versions.
  • Maintain design drawing standards for both AutoCAD® and Revit® platforms.
  • Work with Senior Mechanical Designers or Superusers to create Revit families and content.
  • Leverage Bluebeam® or other PDF editing software to produce drawings and backgrounds for design and/or as-built condition purposes.
  • Maintain existing building drawing record file structure and ensure new drawings are saved in compliance with existing standards for future access.
  • Train co-op students how to produce design drawings in compliance with department standards.
  • Ensure design drawings produced by co-op students meet department standards.
  • Use Company tools to manage requests for information and shop drawing progress.
  • Work with the project manager and the field foreman to create As-Built condition drawings for projects.
  • Produce all documents on time and within budget (estimated drafting hours) in a timely manner based on job requirements to meet commitments to our customers, both internal and external.
  • Actively pursue self-development of skills as they relate to the duties of this job position.
Requirements
  • Two-year technical or Associate's degree in Computer Aided Drafting/Construction Technology or similar.
  • Minimum of 3 years working in a mechanical/plumbing trade or 3 years of design experience using Revit MEP 2018 or higher.

IDEALLY, YOU’LL ALSO HAVE: (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

  • Experience with mechanical systems drafting using Autodesk Fabrication CADmep software.
  • Ability to lay out and re-size mechanical ductwork, piping, plumbing, and similar activities.
  • Ability to visualize three-dimensional layouts from two-dimensional drawings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • Desire to learn and understand mechanical and plumbing system design with a willingness to seek knowledge from others.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, architectural, and structural construction documents.
  • Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.
  • Must have good follow-through and self-implemented quality control measures.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet simultaneous deadlines. Flexible with work schedule and willing to work overtime if required to meet project requirements.
  • Possess and maintain an exceptional work ethic, uphold company values, and demand the highest standard of conduct from self and others.
  • Self-starter with a Positive Attitude and a sense of teamwork
