Job summary

Corning is seeking a Mechanical Design Technician in North Carolina to design and document equipment for global fiber manufacturing projects, including capital capacity and cost-reduction initiatives. The role supports the Equipment Projects team and collaborates with OFC engineering and manufacturing communities.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical or industrial technical field.
  • Minimum 1 year designing and documenting manufacturing equipment.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD tools: Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Vault.

Responsibilities

  • Design and document current and future manufacturing equipment for global fiber manufacturing.
  • Partner with multifunctional teams to define and deliver equipment technology for capital capacity, cost reduction, quality improvement, and standardization projects.
  • Support project execution by coordinating equipment packages, design reviews, stakeholder input, and integration of new technology.
  • Identify obsolete production parts, evaluate alternatives, and support equipment improvements and replacement plans to reduce downtime.
  • Troubleshoot development equipment in lab or manufacturing environment using basic mechanical tools.
  • Travel to project and manufacturing sites as needed to assess equipment configurations, capture undocumented changes, and submit redlines through ECR/MCS processes.
  • Create and maintain equipment, procedure, and project documentation using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CAD, Vault, and related documentation systems.
  • Collaborate with CAD Drafting, ETQ, engineering, and receiving teams to ensure documentation compliance and support training for deployed equipment and processes.

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to becoming a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

The Mechanical Design Technician position will be responsible for equipment design and documentation as it pertains to new optical fiber capacity projects, cost avoidance initiatives, and replacement of obsolete parts in OFC manufacturing facilities for the Fiber Technology Platforms and Projects department. The primary component of the scope will be to assist the Equipment Projects team in execution of new capital equipment design, documentation and support the OFC engineering departments and manufacturing community with technology synergy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and document current and future manufacturing equipment for global fiber manufacturing.

Location and Work Schedule:
  • Normal Business Hours - 8am to 5pm
Travel Requirements:
  • Travel average <25%, mostly within NC, but can include international sites 1-2x/year (India, Poland, China).
  • Ability to secure a passport.
Education and Experience:
  • Associate’s degree in mechanical or industrial technical degree (design/drafting, mechanical, mechatronics, industrial) or relevant project and manufacturing equipment experience.
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience in designing and documenting manufacturing equipment.
Required Skills:
  • Design with 3D tools like Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, Vault experience or any other 3D solid modeling tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and people skills to interact effectively with team members and stakeholders, including multinational teams.
  • Windows Office Suite, specifically using Excel and Word to create and modify documentation.
  • Manages multiple tasks and projects with minimal supervision, balancing priorities while maintaining follow-through and accountability.
  • Apply rigorous logic, data, and experience to solve equipment and process problems beyond the obvious first answer.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail, thoroughness, and pride in producing accurate, high‑quality work.
  • Works with a safety-first mindset and protects intellectual property and sensitive information.
  • Communicates effectively with internal customers and colleagues, adapts quickly to changing requirements, and anticipates future needs.
  • Has the ability to apply hands on skill when needed for debug and troubleshooting of equipment.
Desired Skills:
  • Optical Fiber manufacturing experience, specifically Draw and Fibermaking experience – can be in development, engineering, or operations.
  • Proficient Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Vault user with more than 2 years of experience.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic components/controls.
  • Demonstration of project planning, installation & debug of manufacturing equipment.
  • Detailing of mechanical parts/assemblies in Inventor and creation of mechanical equipment drawing packages for new platform concepts, cost avoidance projects and draw configurations.

The range for this position is $62,547.00-$86,003.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
