Job summary

American Chillers in Columbia, SC is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer to own the mechanical design of our chillers. You will design frames, enclosures, piping, and component packaging, build 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings, and help develop new platforms for markets like BESS and data centers.

This design-first role focuses on 3D CAD, design calculations, and releasing build-ready designs, with collaboration on non-standard applications and close interaction with the shop floor.

Qualifications

• 3-7 years of mechanical design experience on equipment, machinery, or engineered products.
• Strong 3D parametric CAD skills, ideally Autodesk Inventor; SolidWorks experience welcomed.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
• Solid fundamentals: thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and basic structural analysis.
• Clean drawings, tolerancing, accurate BOMs, and careful revision control.
• On-site in the Columbia, SC area; this is not a remote role.

Responsibilities

• Design chillers in 3D and model frames, bases, enclosures, sheet-metal panels, and assemblies.
• Route refrigerant and process-water piping with valves and fittings for manufacturability.
• Release build-ready designs with production drawings, BOMs, and assembly documentation.
• Develop new products from concept to prototype to production for various markets.
• Build configurable master models to enable rapid variant creation.
• Perform engineering math including heat transfer, pressure drop, and structural checks.
• Design for manufacturing and cost, reducing part count and lead time.
• Own revision control by checking in/out designs and managing ECOs.
