Qualifications

  • Experience in mechanical design/manufacturing of aerospace structures
  • Creo Parametric CAD with skeletons, large assemblies, piping and harness modules and drawing creation with GD&T

Responsibilities

  • Design spacecraft structures, mechanisms, antennas and payload placements from concept to integration and test based on requirements.
  • Perform detailed design tasks using Creo Parametric CAD to develop and document designs for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Produce mechanical drawings and Model Based Designs (MBDs) using GD&T processes.
  • Interface with mechanical design and engineering teams for manufacturability and efficiency.
  • Spend 90%+ of time on detailed design tasks using Creo Parametric CAD and related tools to document designs for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Other duties as assigned

As a Mechanical Design Engineer – Level 2 or Level 3 located in Dulles, VA, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one. This position is 100% onsite and cannot accommodate telecommute work.

The East Engineering organization is seeking a mid-level Mechanical Design Engineer to perform mechanical design tasks on one or more spacecraft systems or subsystems. The Mechanical Designer will work with other designers and engineers on Spacecraft Structures, Subsystems, Mechanisms, MGSE, or Proposals across the three business areas to develop and enhance critical technical capabilities that drive our businesses. Skills include, but not limited to, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T), Engineering Drawings, and Design for Manufacturing.

This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design of Spacecraft Structures, Mechanisms, Antenna and Payload placement of mechanical hardware from concept through integration and test all based on customer driven requirements.
  • Perform detailed design tasks using Creo Parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other software tools to develop and document designs for manufacturing and ultimately assembly into spacecraft.
  • Produce Mechanical drawings and Model Based Designs (MBD’s) using industry standard GD&T processes.
  • Interface with Mechanical design and engineering teams to produce efficient and manufacturable spacecraft parts and assemblies.
  • 90% of the day or more will be performing detailed design tasks using Creo Parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) and other software tools to develop and document designs for manufacturing and ultimately assembly into spacecraft.
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications For Level 2
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with 2 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 0 years of professional experience. Will consider an additional 4+ years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Top-Secret security clearance
  • Experience with performing mechanical tasks associated with design and manufacturing of aerospace structures.
  • Experience with Creo Parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) software including use of skeletons, large assembly management, with piping and harness modules and drawing creation with GD&T.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite.
Basic Qualifications For Level 3
  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with 5 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 3 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 1 year of professional experience. Will consider an additional 4+ years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Secret security clearance
  • Experience with performing mechanical tasks associated with design and manufacturing of aerospace structures.
  • Experience with Creo Parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) software including use of skeletons, large assembly management, with piping and harness modules and drawing creation with GD&T.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with GD&T standards and preparation of manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience with MBD’s, Large Assembly management, Skeletons, piping and harness modules, 3D Printing, Design for Manufacturing, and hands-on hardware fabrication.
  • Experience with Blender or other animation software
  • Understanding of or passionate about spacecraft layout and design.
  • Training in the use of PTC Creo, GD&T standards for preparation of manufacturing documentation.

Northrop Grumman Total Rewards

Primary Level Salary Range: $91,800.00 - $137,600.00

Secondary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
