Job summary

Harris Hill Automation is seeking an Automation Mechanical Design Engineer to create robust automation systems and produce reliable 3D models, BOMs and 2D drawings. You will collaborate with assembly and service teams, engage with customers for information, and ensure adherence to design standards and NDA requirements.

The role emphasizes experience in automated equipment design, CAD proficiency, and the ability to translate mechanical concepts into manufacturable solutions at a project level.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; 3+ years of design experience in automation preferred.
• Experience designing custom machinery or automated equipment is strongly preferred.
• Experience in machine-building/manufacturing environments is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design robust, cost-effective automation solutions (pick and place, processing, feeding, machine tending, inspection, assembly).
• Generate accurate BOMs and 2D drawings; support manufacturing.
• Consult with assembly for instructions and guidance; visit customer sites in New England as needed.
• Maintain accurate project records and adhere to company standards and NDA.

Job description

As Automation Mechanical Design Engineer, you may be tasked with any of the following duties:

• Design of robust and cost-effective automation solutions (pick and place, processing, feeding, machine tending, inspection, assembly, etc)
• Generate accurate BOMs, 2D shop drawings
• Consulting with assembly for instructions, techniques, and guidance
• Customer site visits (New England) for project review, information gathering, and installation support.
• Keep accurate records of project information, time, and tasks details
• Maintain professionalism and tactful communication when interacting with coworkers, vendors, and customers
• Adhere to HHA design standards
• Adhere to NDA and HHA policies
• Other duties as may arise from time to time and as may be assigned to the employee

Education & Experience

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, or a related field preferred or 3+ years of mechanical design experience, preferably in industrial automation, machine design, robotics, or custom equipment.
• Experience designing custom machinery or automated equipment strongly preferred.
• Experience working in a machine-building or manufacturing environment preferred.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency with 3D CAD software; experience with Autodesk Fusion preferred.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including:
• Machine structures and frames
• Bearings and power transmission
• Motors and gearboxes
• Grippers and end-of-arm tooling
• Fasteners and hardware
• Tolerance and fit
• Ability to create accurate 3D models, assemblies, BOMs, and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings.
• Understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
• Ability to select appropriate mechanical components based on load, speed, accuracy, duty cycle, and operating environment.
• Familiarity with common industrial automation components and manufacturers.
• Understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
• Ability to design with consideration for machining, fabrication, welding, assembly, installation, and serviceability.
• Experience designing components for CNC machining, laser cutting, bending, and/or other common manufacturing processes.
