My client i, an early-stage defense technology startup in Hawthorne, CA, seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design the hardware for a directed energy system that defends against drone swarms. You will own mechanical designs from concept through fabrication, focusing on sheet metal and CNC-machined parts and integrating with RF components.

Based on 2-7 years of hands-on experience, you will work on-site in a lab with power electronics, shaping high-power housing structures and a robotic gimbal system

Qualifications

• 2-7 years of experience as a mechanical engineer.
• Hands-on experience with RF components and systems.
• Experience working on robotic electromechanical systems (gimbal systems preferred).
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with sheet metal and CNC machined parts.
• CAD design experience with sheet metal and CNC machined components.
• US citizenship or permanent residency (Green Card) for ITAR compliance, with no visa sponsorship.
• Background in embedded systems.
• Degree in mechanical engineering.
• Experience with hydraulics and thermals.

My client i is an early-stage defense technology startup in Hawthorne, CA (Los Angeles), currently operating in stealth. Its mission is to defend the West against suicide and surveillance drones. The company is building what it describes as the world's first scalable directed energy system, a next-generation high-power radio frequency (RF) technology that sends concentrated energy through free space to bring down drones, including whole swarms.

The problem: Drone attacks are already damaging critical infrastructure such as LNG facilities, data centers, and airports in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Russia, and they are likely to spread worldwide. My client is working quickly to stop this kind of large-scale destruction with a defense system built to scale.

Culture: The company is a fast-moving, hands-on engineering company. It values urgency, a bias toward action, and first-principles thinking. Engineers work on-site in a lab with power electronics and RF equipment, and they get real ownership of hardware that ships.

The role:

We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer with 3-7 years of experience to design the physical hardware behind a next-generation directed energy system that defends against drone swarms and suicide drones. You're a hands-on individual contributor who is strong in sheet metal and CNC-machined part design and has built electromechanical or robotic systems. We're an LA-based, venture-backed defense tech startup that recently raised $10M from top-tier investors including Valor. Our small team includes engineers from leading high-power RF and defense companies. Pedigree matters less than ability. We care about how good you are, not which logos are on your resume.

What will you be doing?

• Spending a lot of time in CAD designing sheet metal and CNC-machined parts
• Designing the mechanical housings and structures for several high-power RF components in your first 60 days
• Building an electromechanical robotic gimbal system that aims and positions the directed energy system
• Working on-site in a hands-on lab with power electronics and RF equipment, working closely with RF and electrical engineers
• Owning designs from concept through fabrication as one of the company's first mechanical engineers

Requirements:
