- Take products from napkin sketch to production: concept design, detailed design, prototyping, validation testing, and release to manufacturing
- Build 3D models, assemblies, and fully dimensioned drawings in SolidWorks, Creo, NX, Inventor, or CATIA, with GD&T per ASME Y14.5 applied correctly
- Run FEA, CFD, and thermal studies (ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation, COMSOL, or similar) and use the results to make designs lighter, stronger, and cheaper
- Select and size materials, fasteners, bearings, gears, seals, actuators, and motors, balancing performance, cost, weight, and manufacturability
- Apply DFM/DFA across CNC machining, sheet metal, castings, welded fabrications, injection moulding, and additive manufacturing
- Build and test prototypes, run tolerance stack-ups, and lead design reviews, DFMEAs, and root-cause investigations when something fails in the lab or the field
- Work with domestic and overseas suppliers, machine shops, and contract manufacturers to get quality parts on time and on budget, including supporting first article inspections and production ramps
- Manage BOMs, ECRs/ECOs, and revisions in PLM and ERP systems (Windchill, Teamcenter, Arena, Oracle, SAP, or similar)
- Design to applicable standards and regulations such as ASME, UL, ANSI, ISO, FDA design controls, and ITAR/EAR requirements, and prepare documentation for certification and audits
- Support installation, commissioning, and field troubleshooting, including visits to plants, test sites, and customer facilities
- Use Python, MATLAB, or Excel to automate calculations and design trade studies, and use AI-assisted tools and generative design carefully to explore concepts faster, with your own engineering judgment on every drawing and release
- Collaborate daily with electrical, firmware, controls, quality, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to ship hardware people trust
- Write clear design specs, test plans, validation reports, and work instructions
- Level Typical experience What you’ll own
- Mechanical Design Engineer I / EIT - 0-2 years : Detailed CAD, drawings, hand calcs, test setups, and prototype builds, learning with a dedicated mentor and a paid path to your PE
- Mechanical Design Engineer II - 2-6 years : Owning subsystems or complete product designs, leading analysis and validation, managing supplier relationships, and mentoring junior engineers
- Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - 6+ years : Leading complex programs and architecture decisions, setting design standards, guiding cross-functional teams, signing off on releases (and sealing as a PE where required), and shaping the product roadmap
Promotion criteria are written down at every level, with regular career conversations. Many of our engineers have moved into principal engineer, engineering management, systems engineering, program management, and product leadership roles.
