Job summary

Vertiv in Anderson, South Carolina seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to design power system components for switchgear lines, using sheet metal, busbar, power cables, and wiring harnesses. You will create complex drawings, BOMs, and document designs in PLM while guiding cross functional teams.

You will collaborate with manufacturing and simulation teams on seismic, CFD, and thermal analyses, review requirements, and ensure compliance with UL/NEC/IEC standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with 3+ years of product development experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks and/or Creo.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and related components.
  • Experience with model-based design (MBD) a plus.
  • Strong cross-functional communication and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead concept and detailed design of power systems including sheet metal, busbar, power cable and wire harnesses.
  • Develop complex drawings and BOMs for mechanical designs, including 2D drawings and MBD.
  • Collaborate with other mechanical engineers to break down tasks and discuss ideas.
  • Submit and release change orders into the PLM system with revision control.
  • Review analyses for seismic, CFD, and thermal designs with the internal simulation team.
  • Work with manufacturing to build prototypes and provide direction as needed.
  • Interpret UL, NEC, IEC design standards for product applications.
  • Order parts and support prototype builds and production.
  • Create customer-facing submittal drawings for finished designs.
  • Support prototype/testing and manufacturing with issue resolution.

Mechanical Design Engineer:
Job Summary

Vertiv is seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Anderson, South Carolina, supporting high-impact projects in the data center industry with a strong focus on low-voltage (LV) power distribution systems. The Mechanical Engineer will focus and be responsible for designing Mechanical part for Switchboard / Switchgear product lines. The mechanical Engineer supports the design from start to finish and provides technical guidance to Supply chain and Material Management in global and local locations to support New Product Development and sustaining products. The role will review requirements and specifications, provide feedback, and use 3D CAD software to develop product designs. The product designs are documented in PLM software to release drawings and bills of material.

This position will be based onsite at Vertiv's Anderson, SC office location.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Mechanical Engineer (ME) to lead concept and detailed design of power systems including the use of sheet metal, busbar, power cable, and wire harnesses.
  • Develop complex drawings and bills of material for designs, including 2D drawings and/or MBD (Model Based Design) for the mechanical design.
  • Collaborate with other Mechanical Engineers to efficiently breakdown tasks, discuss design ideas and work towards the best possible solution.
  • Write, submit, and release change orders for new and released products into our PLM system using our revision control system.
  • Request and review analysis for Seismic, CFD, and Thermal designs while working with our internal simulation team.
  • Work with manufacturing engineers and production associates to build prototypes and provide direction when needed.
  • Familiarity with and ability to interpret industry design standards (UL, NEC, and IEC) for application to product designs.
  • Order parts/components and support for prototype builds and production.
  • Create customer facing product submittal drawings for finished designs.
  • Support prototype/product testing as needed – typically assisting in thermal, mechanical layout, and mechanical strength issues.
  • Support manufacturing with building issues of new designs.
  • Occasional contact with outside vendors and suppliers as needed.
  • Identify areas requiring process improvement or documentation. Work with management to execute improvements.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years of experience in product development.; OR Associate’s Degree with minimum 7 years experience.
  • Expert in 3D CAD design and programs, prefer experience with Solidworks and/or Creo.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and familiarity with electrical components such as fuses, circuit breakers, and transformers.
  • Experience with model-based design (MBD) a plus, but not required.
  • General knowledge 3-phase power is preferred, but not required.
  • The ability to work effectively in a cross functional group setting, including providing technical guidance to support management.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with ability to summarize technical data/results quickly for non-technical audiences.
  • Mostly sedentary desk work, must be able to occasionally work in a power lab environment, including lifting objects, running cables, or stepping over/around objects
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Travel as required, domestic and international, <10%
