Job summary

Rolls-Royce plc is seeking a Mechanical Control Units Design Engineer in Indianapolis, IN. You will develop hardware requirements for control units and oversee supplier design work through gated reviews, spanning from concept to production release.

Ideal candidates have a Mechanical/Aerospace engineering background with 1+ year experience in mechanical design or controls, and you must be able to obtain/maintain US security clearance. Relocation is available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 1+ year of mechanical design or control systems experience
  • US Citizenship required to obtain and maintain security clearance
  • Experience with control systems hardware design and NPI/change management/risk processes
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis and problem-solving techniques
  • Knowledge of RTCA/DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 environmental testing standards
  • Current or able to obtain US DoD Secret or Top-Secret clearance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Position Summary

The Mechanical Control Units Design Engineer will develop control system hardware requirements, then guide Rolls‑Royce approved suppliers through the detailed design process to ensure that delivered hardware meets all technical and program requirements. The role will span the project lifecycle from requirements definition, concept development, detail component design, validation, and verification testing through final production release. The Design Engineer will interface with both the external suppliers and the internal engine program teams.

What you will be doing
  • Responsible for the development of Controls Hardware components, including oversight of the mechanical design and analysis of components, taking the design through multiple gated design reviews, and oversight of the validation testing performed by contracted suppliers of the Controls Units.
  • Drive coordination of effort between the design, purchasing, manufacturing engineering teams with our Controls Hardware suppliers to ensure that program needs are met through the execution of the work package to plan.
  • Ensure project risks (technical, cost, supply chain and schedule) are identified and managed in accordance with the risk management plan.
  • Engage in technical, manufacturing and supply chain issues and opportunities to enable quick decision making.
Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 1+ years of experience in mechanical design or control systems, OR Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, OR JD/PhD
  • To be considered for this role, you must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which requires US Citizenship
  • Preferred: Desire to successfully lead in a team environment, establishing collaborative relationships with coworkers
  • Experience with control systems hardware design
  • Experience with New Product Introduction (NPI), change management, and risk management processes
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis and other problem-solving techniques
  • Knowledge of RTCA/DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 environmental testing standards
  • Current (or ability to obtain/maintain) US DOD Secret or Top-Secret security Clearance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
