Job summary

Voya Energy in Hayward, CA is seeking scientists and engineers to lead the cell architecture for its metal-air fuel cell and scale it from bench to pilot. The successful candidate will set the technical direction of the company and work across disciplines to accelerate development.

The role emphasizes designing, building, and validating high-power cells, selecting materials, and developing stack hardware while collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver durable, scalable energy

Qualifications

• Experience in developing novel electrochemical cell architectures and building physical stack hardware for flow-based systems (bipolar plates, flow fields, manifolds, gasket/sealing, compression hardware).
• Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design and DFM; able to move from drawing to prototype to test stand.
• Mechanical background with exposure to electrochemistry preferred.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams in system or device development.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and validate a high-power metal-air fuel cell for Voya’s generator.
• Work with material scientists to optimize cathode, anode, membrane/separator, and electrolyte materials and form‑factor.
• Develop and iterate current collectors, separators/membranes, and electrode architectures to improve power, efficiency, and durability.
• Develop manufacturing procedures for novel architectures.
• Collaborate with subscale and stack teams to address scale-up limitations and implement innovative solutions.
• Prototype bench-scale electrochemical flow cells to test new chemistries and architectures before pilot-scale builds.
• Design and iterate cell and stack hardware including bipolar plates, flow fields, manifolds, end plates, gaskets, and clamping systems.
