Job summary

Leidos Defense is seeking a Mechanical / Cable Designer to help create the critical connections between advanced hardware and secure systems. You will design mechanical components, develop cable layouts, and produce installation drawings using Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Visio.

Ideal candidates have a degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience, with hands-on experience in cable design, GD&T, and MIL-STD-31000 requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or 2+ years experience (or 4+ years in lieu).
• Proficient in Creo Parametric or SolidWorks; experience in both preferred.
• 2D drawing experience with SolidWorks or Creo.
• Onsite work at a Leidos facility with limited supervision.
• Solid understanding of mechanical design principles.
• Flexible and able to switch between tasks and toolsets.
• US citizenship; eligible for secret clearance; reside in North Alabama or willing to relocate to Huntsville area.

Responsibilities

• Participate in design reviews, peer reviews, and drawing reviews.

Leidos Defense is seeking a Mechanical / Cable Designer to help create the critical "nervous system" that connects the advanced hardware we develop to protect America and its allies.

Primary Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies.
• Create and maintain Technical Data Package (TDP) artifacts, including drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and specifications.
• Develop mechanical designs with consideration for functionality, manufacturability, assembly, inspection, and producibility.
• Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and applicable engineering drawing standards.
• Support prototype fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing activities by troubleshooting mechanical issues and developing engineering solutions in coordination with senior engineers.
• Route electrical cables / wire harnesses using Creo and SolidWorks.
• Develop cable designs using Visio and AutoCAD, considering connector, backshell, wiring, and protective covering part selection.
• Produce cable installation drawings and work instructions from 3D routed cable models in Creo and SolidWorks.
• Independently manage tasks and projects with guidance from senior engineers.
• Participate in design reviews, peer reviews, drawing reviews, and other technical meetings throughout the product development lifecycle.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or Associate’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience or 4+ years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
• Proficient in either Creo Parametric or SolidWorks and able to learn new tools and techniques. Experience in both is preferred.
• 2D Drawing Experience using SolidWorks or Creo.
• Ability to work onsite at a Leidos facility and independently with limited supervision.
• Basic understanding of mechanical design principles.
• Flexible and capable of switching between tasks and toolsets.
• Candidates must be a resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to the Huntsville - North Alabama, AL area.
• US Citizenship is required.
• Position requires eligibility to obtain and maintain secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of relevant experience, or Associate’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience or 6+ years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
• Knowledge of ASME Y14.100 and Y14.5 standards.
• 3D routing experience with SolidWorks and / or Creo.
• 2D drawing experience using AutoCAD and / or Visio.
• Experience with Windchill PLM.
• Experience in cable design.
• Familiar with IPC/WHMA-A-620D.
• Familiar with military style electrical connectors such as MIL-DTL-38999.
• Experience creating technical data packages to MIL-STD-31000 requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret cable wiring diagrams.
• Hands‑on experience in mechanical and/or cable assembly.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $69,550.00 - $125,725.00
