Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking a Mechanical Boiler Service Technician to install and repair boilers, pumps, burners, and pressure vessels. The role requires reading blueprints and manuals, troubleshooting, and performing on-site service at customer sites.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years of boiler experience, a valid driver’s license, and strong reading and math skills. Travel up to 70% and on-call work are required, with strict adherence to ASME and local codes and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of technical training.

  • Travel at least 70% of the time and be on-call as needed.

Responsibilities

Description

This Mechanical Boiler Service Technician is responsible for comprehending and utilizing blueprints, sketches, drawings, technical manuals, and work process instructions to install, and repair boilers, pumps, burners, and other pressure vessels.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Test and inspect boiler systems.
  • Inspect assembled vessels and individual components, such as tubes, fittings, valves, controls, and auxiliary mechanisms, to locate any defects.
  • Evaluate basic boiler room systems (steam and hydronic), gather information, and help solve problems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair valves, motors, and safety devices.
  • Install manholes, handholes, taps, tubes, valves, gauges, and feedwater connections in tube boilers, using hand tools.
  • Clean pressure vessel equipment, using scrapers, wire brushes, and cleaning solvents.
  • Read cut sheets layout from drawing and cut material from layout and cut sheets.
  • Interpret drawings, and assemble required material, direct helpers and use work tools and knowledge of specialty tools (torque wrench, mill hogg, torch, plasma cutter, chop saws, mag drills, Hogan drills) to complete work. Ability to make modifications to the equipment per these drawings.
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to current or daily job duties.
  • Comply with the highest level of safety during all stages of project execution to avoid any type of incidents and or accidents.
  • Complete service reports on the job, have clients sign the completed report before leaving the site, submit the signed reports to the office.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.
Work Environment

This job operates in internal and external environments which may include inclement weather conditions. Environment will include working with hot steam, liquids tight spaces and other conditions depending on customer site(s).

Requirements
  • At least 3 years’ experience servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing boilers, pressure vessels, burners, boiler accessories, and other heat producing equipment.
  • A valid driver’s license is required with a clean record. Must be insurable with no major infractions
  • Must pass pre-employment background and an initial and subsequent random drug screening tests.
  • Knowledge in water treatment and how it relates to operation of the equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of ASME, state and local codes.
  • Proficient in welding and cutting.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow procedures, specifications and drawings.
  • Self-motivated individual who works independently, as well as in a team atmosphere.
  • Good customer service skills are mandatory.
  • Present a positive professional image with customers.
  • Must be able to operate independently and communicate efficiently and effectively with both customers and management.
  • Detail-oriented in completing work orders, all required forms, and checklists.
  • Must have strong language skills as well as industry specific vocabulary.
  • Basic mathematics, algebra, and formula knowledge are required.
  • Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with computers, MS office, familiarity with smart phone, internet, and email functions.
  • Ability to travel at least 70% of the time as well as being on call as needed.
Physical Requirements and expected work hours
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, squat, stand, and climb frequently.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to push/pull heavy equipment and maneuver tubing and materials.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Required to assist in providing 24-hr service by being “on call” on a rotating basis.
  • Be fit for a respirator.
Foundational Mechanical Skills:
  • Technician understands basic hand and power tools used in mechanical installations.
  • Technician understands welding safety, PPE requirements, and shop safety protocols.
  • Technician understands basic welding techniques (stick, MIG) and weld joint types.
  • Technician understands how to read and interpret simple mechanical blueprints.
  • Technician understands basic layout and measurement tools (tape, square, level, chalk line).
  • Technician understands the function of core boiler room components (boiler, feed tank, blowdown).
Required Education:
  • Completed High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of technical school, community college or trade school.
