Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will lead the design and analysis of piping systems associated with space vehicle launch facilities. Typical systems include high pressure gas and cryogenic fluid systems. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the technical lead and primary group representative responsible for coordination and delivery of piping and tubing systems analysis for launch complex GSE and test facilities.

  • Own the development and maintenance of piping analyses through the full design lifecycle, ensuring technical rigor and alignment with program requirements.

  • Define and enforce analysis standards, methods, and best practices for the piping analysis discipline.

  • Lead detailed peer reviews of analyses produced by internal team members and external partners, and clearly communicate findings to stakeholders for acceptance and/or design iteration.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers in the use of piping analysis tools, interpretation of results, and application of design codes.

  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure designs close on cost, schedule, and technical requirements, supporting structural, FEA, and fluid flow analyses with piping system details as needed.

  • Identify and drive resolution of complex technical risks within piping systems across multiple concurrent projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four-year aerospace or mechanical engineering degree (or similar discipline).

  • 7+ years of experience in a technical engineering role, with a demonstrated progression of responsibility.

  • Extensive experience performing piping stress analyses and interpreting results using Bentley AutoPIPE, including serving as a technical reviewer for others' analyses.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring others in the use of piping analysis tools and reviewing analyses.

  • Deep working knowledge of ASME B31.3 design criteria for stress analysis of piping systems.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen a culture of inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience, especially in design and analysis of high pressure gas and cryogenic piping and tubing systems.

  • Proven experience leading piping analysis efforts on large-scale aerospace or industrial projects.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard components, installation, and fabrication methods of piping systems (pipe stock, fittings, connections, valves, fasteners, structural members, welding, etc.).

  • Knowledge of fluid components typical in tubing and piping systems (valves, regulators, pumps, etc.).

  • Experience interpreting P&IDs and fabrication/installation drawings for piping systems.

  • Experience using AutoCAD or AutoCAD P&ID for creation and interrogation of P&IDs.

  • Knowledge of solid modelling or plant modelling tools (Creo or similar BIM tools).

  • Experience with structural hand calculations and analysis software (ANSYS, NASTRAN, etc.).
