Job summary

Johnston County Public Schools Transportation Services in Smithfield, NC seeks a Mechanic III to maintain and repair school district vehicles. The incumbent will diagnose, repair, and service fleets, respond to road calls, and perform major engine/electrical work as needed.

Job Description

JOHNSTON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

MECHANIC III JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical and generating systems of automotive equipment.
  • Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle diagnostics.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Repair problems found during monthly inspections and routine maintenance.
  • Respond to road calls and after‑hour calls as needed.
  • Ability to perform major repairs on light and heavy‑duty fleet vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED from a regionally or nationally accredited institution
  • Five years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive or diesel equipment.
  • Technical training in automotive or diesel equipment preferred.
  • 4 out of 7 ASEs (Diesel, Electrical, Brake & A/C) or possession of 30‑day inspection certification for 6 years (preferred).

Appropriate North Carolina driver’s license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Candidates must be able to obtain CDL‑B w/ P, S & N endorsements within 180 days of start date. Candidates must be able to obtain a 30‑Day Inspection license, by passing a state exam provided by the Department of Public Instruction, within 180 days of the start date.
