Job summary

Doña Ana County seeks an automotive mechanic to perform fleet repairs, diagnose mechanical issues, and maintain county vehicles and equipment.

This full‑time position requires hands‑on expertise with gas and diesel systems, engines, brakes, and electrical components, plus the ability to read work orders and maintain records.

Responsibilities include regular maintenance, emergency repairs, and ensuring safety in a busy county garage. Valid driver's license required; CDL Class B preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) years full-time experience as an automotive mechanic.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record; CDL Class B preferred.
• Must pass pre-employment background check and driving record check.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs, maintenance, and major overhauls on gas or diesel vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose, analyze, and undertake overhaul and maintenance tasks per work orders.
• Repair air-cooled equipment (ATVs, generators, lawn mowers, etc.).
• Inspect engines, disassemble and inspect parts for wear; test repairs.
• Perform engine tune-ups, brake work, and transmission/engine replacement as needed.
• Keep accurate records of materials and time spent on each work order.
• Ensure safe handling of tools and maintain a clean, hazard-free workspace.

Job Description

PURPOSE SUMMARY. Perform and undertake a variety of broad to specific fleet repair, mechanical diagnosis, and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Perform repairs, maintenance, and major overhauls to a variety of gas or diesel vehicles such as automobiles, equipment, and trucks.
• Assess, diagnose, analyze, recommend, and undertake overhaul repair, maintenance, and upkeep tasks required based on work orders received.
• Perform repair and maintenance on air-cooled equipment such as ATVs, generators, lawn mowers, riding movers, etc.
• Diagnose problems with equipment, disassemble engines, and examine parts for defects and excessive wear.
• Perform engine repair and overhaul as needed, including complete diagnostic and repair of all engine components and vehicle systems using computerized testing equipment. Test and validate repairs and maintenance work.
• Perform regularly scheduled, emergency, and/or preventative maintenance work.
• Fix tire (patch or other repair appropriate to the situation) or as required, install new tires (mount/dismount). Remove tires and inspect brakes for wear and leaks; replace brakes as necessary; turn Machine brake drums and rotors with a brake lathe
• Perform engine tune-ups, including replacement of spark plugs, distributor caps, ignition rotor, ignition wires, fuel filters, etc. Remove and replace transmissions and engines.
• Remove, inspect, install/replace all worn steering/suspension parts such as control arms, tie rods, bushings, ball joints, and center links.
• Diagnose, inspect, and install/replace all worn charging and starting components of the electrical systems, such as batteries, alternators, fan belts, fuses, wiring, and starters.
• Diagnose, inspect, and install/replace heating and air conditioning systems and components using proper tools and equipment, while demonstrating proper A/C recovery/recycling, evacuation, and recharging techniques.
• Perform test and diagnosis of electrical systems and components.
• Remove and replace exhaust system components such as tailpipes, catalytic converters, and resonators; weld and solder equipment parts.
• Perform differential service and repair; perform oil changes; check fluid levels and air in tires, lubricate moving parts, and change coolant, oil, fluids, and filters as required. Adjust and repairs fuel systems, timing, and related components. Test drives equipment.
• Respond to calls for emergency maintenance or emergency wrecker service.
• Maintain accurate records of materials and time spent on each assigned work order.
• Ensure safe handling and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials; maintain a clean, organized, and hazard‑free work area.
• Comply with all department and County policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS

• A. Education. High school diploma or equivalent.
• B. Experience. Three (3) years full‑time experience as an automotive mechanic.
• C. Experience/Education substitution. In accordance with County Policy.
• D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid driver's license. Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy. Commercial Driver's License Class B is preferred.
• Special Requirements: Employees with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must comply with the drug and alcohol Clearinghouse requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
• E. Other (e.g., post‑offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Must pass pre‑employment background check and driving record check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

Knowledge of :

• Methods, principles, practices, tools, and materials of the mechanic's trade.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions used in vehicle maintenance and repair operations.
• Parts and supplies needed to perform a variety of maintenance and repairs on automotive equipment.
• General office practices, procedures, and operation of the computer and word processor.

Skill in :

• Use of diagnostic scanners.
• Use of multi‑meters; Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, or electronic system malfunctions.
• Use of automotive tools and equipment for maintenance and repair.

Ability to:

• Interpret and analyze service manuals, technical data, and information for decision‑making and work purposes that may include the need to take action in stressful situations.
• Effective communication and establishing and maintaining effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

Compensation Range

$16.00 - $24.26
