Job summary

Columbus McKinnon is seeking a Part-Time Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance Technician in North Carolina to support project-based and ongoing plant needs. You will install, troubleshoot, repair, and modify electrical and mechanical equipment, including automated machinery and controls, with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

You should be self-driven, able to work with minimal supervision, and capable of supporting installations, relocations, and startup projects across the site.

Qualifications

  • One year certificate from college or technical school, or equivalent experience.
  • Electrical licenses a plus, not required.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical, mechanical, and E&I work on projects and production lines.
  • Install wiring, conduit, and electrical equipment for new machines.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical components and PLC/CNC controlled equipment.
  • Read schematics and follow technical manuals to diagnose issues.
  • Ensure safety procedures and company policies are followed.

Job description

The Part-Time Electrical/Mechanical Maintenance Technician provides skilled electrical, mechanical, and E&I support for project-based work and operational needs. This position will install, troubleshoot, repair, and modify electrical and mechanical equipment, including automated machinery, controls, motors, conveyors, and related systems. The role requires a self-driven individual who can work safely and efficiently with minimal supervision while supporting equipment installations, improvements, relocations, and other plant projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform project-based electrical, mechanical, and E&I work in support of Operations and production.
  • Install power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment, including robots, conveyors, programmable controllers, and other automated equipment.
  • Connect power supply wiring, cables, and controls between machines and equipment.
  • Plan and install wiring, conduit, and electrical equipment for building and equipment installations in accordance with NEC standards.
  • Troubleshoot electrical equipment and components, including transformers, motors, lighting, relays, switches, sensors, and wiring.
  • Test malfunctioning machinery and equipment, identify issues, and develop repair plans with Maintenance associates and equipment service technicians.
  • Repair or replace faulty electrical and electronic components, including wiring, cables, motors, relays, switches, sensors, and printed circuit boards.
  • Replace electric motor bearings and rewire motors as required.
  • Operate and troubleshoot PLC- and CNC-controlled equipment to test for malfunctions and verify repairs.
  • Diagnose and repair or replace faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.
  • Assist with machine installation, relocation, modification, and startup projects, including electrical and mechanical connections.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical drawings.
  • Use electrical testing equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment necessary to complete assigned projects.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and complete projects safely, efficiently, and timely.
  • Communicate project status, issues, and completion to the appropriate supervisor or manager.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area and comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Work at elevated heights when required and follow applicable safety requirements.
  • Perform other project-based duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong electrical, mechanical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, controls, motors, PLCs, CNC equipment, and industrial machinery.
  • Ability to use electrical testing equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other required equipment safely.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements.
  • Ability to understand and follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
  • Ability to research equipment, parts, and technical information using a computer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with Operations, Maintenance, contractors, and service technicians.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures, applicable codes, and company policies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment.
Required Qualifications
  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or one-year related experience and/or training in electronics / electrical / mechanical maintenance; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Electrical licenses a plus, not a must.
  • Must be able to work alone or as a member of a team.
