Overview

The Mechanic B will pursue a career path to qualify as a Mechanic A. The Mechanic B performs electrical, welding or mechanical maintenance work on power plant components and equipment. The Mechanic B (Mechanical) maintains, repairs and installs power piping systems, associated valves, tanks and vessels and various types of rotating mechanical equipment such as, fans, blowers, pumps, motors, etc., using field power tools and precision measuring equipment. The Mechanic B must have a working knowledge in the following areas: confined space entry, basic pumps, coupling alignment, bearing maintenance, pipe fitting, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, scaffolding, mechanical drawing, boiler tube repair, math and industrial safety, machine shop, conduit bending, basic electricity, scaffolding, sky climber/hanging platforms, crane operation and welding (GTAW, SMAW). The Mechanic B (Electrical) installs, repairs and maintains utility electrical equipment such as motors, circuit breakers, transformers, batteries and light and power systems. The Mechanic B (Electrical) reads schematic drawings, and engineering prints and uses test equipment to troubleshoot problems within electrical components, circuits or equipment.

  • The Mechanic B must have a working knowledge of the following areas: confined space entry, basic pumps, coupling alignment, bearing maintenance, pipe fitting, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, scaffolding, mechanical drawing, boiler tube repair, math and industrial safety, machine shop, conduit bending, basic electricity, sky climber/hanging platforms, crane operation, and welding (GTAW, SMAW).
  • Mechanic B (Welder) should be willing to further welding skills.
  • Mechanic B (Welder) is responsible for interpreting welding specifications, standards and procedures and working independently to complete assignments. Perform welding tasks and various mechanical duties on steam, gas and other powerplant systems.
  • The Mechanic B (Electrical) Install, repair, and maintain utility electrical equipment. Read schematic drawings and engineering prints and uses test equipment to troubleshoot problems within electrical components, circuits, or equipment.
  • The Mechanic B must obtain both the New York State and New York City Asbestos Handler's Licenses.
  • The Mechanic B must drive a company vehicle to work locations, when required.
  • Must be willing to gain knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Must be willing to gain welding experience and obtains a license, as required.
  • Must be able to work weekends, midnight shifts, and overtime, when necessary.
Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of relevant work experience with power plant components or equivalent equipment (boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, piping systems, etc.).
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Knowledge in the following areas: confined space entry, pipe fitting, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, rigging, scaffolding, mechanical drawing, boiler tube repair, math and industrial safety, machine shop, scaffolding, crane operation and welding (GTAW, SMAW).
Relevant Work Experience
  • 3-5 years relevant work experience with power plant or equivalent components (boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, piping systems, etc.) Required and
  • Possesses a NYS Asbestos Handler's License. Preferred or
  • Possesses knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Preferred or
  • Possesses a welding certification/license and welding experience, ASME Section IX Preferred
  • This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: Certified welder - ASME Section IX or API 1104 or other Preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Unload materials from delivery vehicles and deliver equipment and materials to various operating facilities
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
