Job summary

Hamilton County in Ohio is seeking a Mechanic 2 under general supervision to diagnose, adjust, repair, maintain County vehicles and equipment including gas, diesel and propane engines.

The role involves major mechanical repairs, fabrication of parts, recordkeeping, on-site repairs, travel to worksites, and opportunities surrounding benefits package and training.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical training with automotive focus and 2 years' maintenance/repair experience or equivalent.
  • Proven knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Strong welding/soldering and fabrication abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, and maintain County vehicles and equipment (gas, diesel, propane).
  • Fabricate or modify parts to complete repairs.
  • Operate test equipment and use tools to locate mechanical problems.
  • Maintain records of repairs and maintenance including oil changes and parts replaced.
  • Perform road call repairs and on-site servicing as needed.
  • Oversee and mentor fellow mechanics and manage parts inventory.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Mechanic 2 diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, maintains and repairs County vehicles and equipment including gas, diesel and propane powered engines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
  • Performs maintenance and major mechanical repair work on County vehicles and equipment including gas, diesel and propane powered engines (e.g., tunes engines, rebuilds and replaces engines, hydraulic systems, brake and exhaust systems, changes fluid, replaces headlights, signal lights, tires, radiators, etc.)
  • Fabricates or modifies parts as needed to perform repairs
  • Operates test equipment or talks to operator to locate mechanical problems
  • Uses hand and electric tools to perform repairs
  • Operates overhead crane to remove and replace parts and supplies
  • Operates pickup truck and wrecker
  • Performs repairs on vehicles and equipment on road call emergencies
  • Picks up supplies and equipment needed for repairs and maintenance
  • Maintains records of equipment repairs and maintenance (e.g., oil changes, lubes, parts replaced, tune-up, dates, etc.)
  • Records daily use of fuel
  • Completes time sheets recording hours worked by mechanics
  • Oversees work of mechanics
  • Maintains adequate supply of parts and supplies needed for maintenance and repair
  • Welds cracked or broken metal parts and appendages on equipment and vehicles
  • Cuts shapes and fabricates brackets, hinges, special tools, etc.,
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed
  • Attends training and seminars, as directed
QUALIFICATIONS: An example of acceptable qualifications:

Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or technical training institute with major course work in Automotive Technology, Automotive Technician, Automotive Maintenance and Repair or Diesel Technician or closely related field and two (2) years' work experience in performing equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must possess a valid state of residency driver’s license.
  • Must remain insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain within the first ninety (90) calendar days of appointment, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver's License issued by the state of residency.
