DescriptionThe Maintenance Mechanic will support the needs of their primary O&M site, in this case both the Tobaccoville and Whitaker Park facilities and other Armstrong Service projects to ensure high levels of customer service that result in client satisfaction and an enjoyable experience for all. Maintenance Mechanic’s provide daily general maintenance, supporting the needs of their O&M costumer site, and other Armstrong Service projects to ensure high levels of customer service that result in client satisfaction. They must apply mechanical knowledge of various utility systems (steam, compressed air, water treatment, HVAC, etc.) to perform all regular and non-routine plant maintenance, including utility operations and clerical work. Able to use manuals and other resources to apply that knowledge to utility plant maintenance and other diverse requirements of the job.
They report to the Lead Mechanic and take direction from the Maintenance Manager and Site Manager. Once trained and qualified, they would work unsupervised and/or alone applying a level of skill and judgement that leads to quick and accurate decisions while having some latitude to make changes within prescribed standards. Their actions should avoid physical harm to personnel, costly damage to equipment, and health hazard to the public, interruption of service to the client or fines by a regulatory agency.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform in a self-directed manner, including foreseeing the need for work and ensuring that the work in completed safely and correctly
- Maintain superior communication with Armstrong personnel and appropriate customer personnel, knowing the needs of the customer before they have to ask us for it
- Perform daily, weekly, monthly, annual and other required area, tool and equipment checks, tests and inspections
- Perform lockout / tagout procedures and work within lockout / tagout and confined space requirements
- Monitor gauges, control systems or other indicators to make sure utility equipment is working properly
- Collect and record data: photos, run hours, operating cycles, etc. to prepare and maintain logs, reports and other documentation
- Adjust controls, start and stop pumps, adjust valves, and operate electric switches and valve controls, while cooperating with Operations, as necessary to safely perform work
- Enter work requests and manage work orders
- Perform all routine maintenance and inspections on equipment, such as cleaning, painting, lubrication, oil changes, packing adjustments, belt and filter changes, internal boiler annuals, pump rebuilds, etc.
- Perform routine welding and pipefitting repairs within their capabilities, training or qualifications
- Maintain, calibrate and repair utility equipment
- Perform precision rotating equipment alignments
- Test and troubleshoot individual components to determine necessary repairs
- Determine types of equipment, tools, and materials needed for jobs
- Inventory, inspect and maintain supplies, tools and equipment
- Identify and correct root cause of malfunctions
- Estimate time and material requirements for jobs
- Record repairs and maintenance performed along with materials used
- Provide information to supervisors, co-workers, and team mates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person to insure transparency and avoid surprises
- Report malfunctions and unusual trends or conditions to Lead Technician, Maintenance Manager and operations personnel
- Notify supervisor immediately of exceptions; safety, downtime, etc.
- Perform all work in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations and in compliance with all departmental safety policies and procedures. This includes using appropriate safety devices and equipment
- As requested, serve as plant safety representative. Duties include evaluating safety-related equipment or procedures and making recommendations; maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and inventories; scheduling and arranging safety training classes, and monitoring adherence to departmental safety policies
- May be assigned responsibility of Lead Technician in their absence
- As directed, conduct individual projects, such as development of procedures, equipment bill of materials, etc.
- Complete required training
- Perform clerical and administrative duties as necessary
- May be required in emergency situations to report to work during unscheduled time, or to remain over the end of shift and maintain flexibility in shift schedules and work that supports their site
- Assist ASI team members with understanding rules, policies, procedures or regulations
- Self-evaluate performance

- Make suggestions for changes to existing procedures

Key Requirements
- A strong understanding of thermodynamic, rotating equipment, piping, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic theory and application, and be able to use manuals and other resources to apply that knowledge in boiler plant operations and other diverse requirements of the job
- Ability to read and understanding equipment instruction and maintenance manuals, drawings, schematics, and blueprints
- Understanding of mathematics: arithmetic, algebra, geometry and their application
- Understanding of equipment alignment, balancing and vibration
- Understanding of non-destructive testing
- The ability to perform a variety of clerical functions, including typing correspondence, making legible and orderly entries in logs and work order reports, and maintaining files
- Ability to focus and pay attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate
