Job summary

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Repairs and maintains automobiles, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment and other types of motor driven and mechanical equipment; does related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the guidance of the Equipment Mechanic who assigns specific tasks and inspects work in progress and upon completion for effectiveness. Overall supervision is provided by the Fleet Manager or Their designee

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Maintains and repairs automobiles, trucks, snow plows, hoists, spreaders, scrapers, cranes, sprayers, tractors, payloaders, backhoes, snow removal equipment, hand-operated and other machinery; relines and adjusts brakes; re-faces valve seats and grinds valves; installs and adjusts main and connecting-rod bearings; installs special accessories such as fans, heaters, spreaders and other miscellaneous equipment; assists in setting up, adjusting, operating and maintaining equipment for testing brakes, wheel alignment, compression, generator, battery, starting motor, lights, ignition, and carburetion; adjusts valve and ignition timing, wheel alignment, shock absorbers, carburetor settings and generator charging rate; removes and replaces worn parts and reassembles transmissions, differentials, hydraulic and mechanical brake systems, springs, clutches, steering gear assemblies, front and rear axles, ignition and fuel systems, exhaust systems, starters, generators and magnetos; hones cylinders; replaces bushing, reams and fits wristpins; fits compression and oil rings; repairs bodies and chassis by straightening and welding fenders, bumpers, axles and frame members, builds and repairs tool boxes, seats stake body parts and side and tail gates; does necessary body painting by hand or with spraying equipment; services equipment with gas, oil, air, water and winter protection and fills out records. Able to use computerized equipment.

Position Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Shall have considerable knowledge and ability to make repairs and adjustments to various automotive systems and components. Shall have the ability to use and care for the tools of the trade including, but not limited to, basic hand tools, battery/charging system testing equipment, metal lathes and drill presses, hydraulically operated vehicle lifts and computerized diagnostic scanners. Shall have the ability to stand, sit, twist and squat for periods of time. Shall have the ability to grasp, hold and finger small components parts. Shall have considerable strength to lift components weighing up to 100 lbs. Shall have considerable stamina to work for long hours under severe weather conditions. Shall have good tolerance for temperature extremes while working out of doors, for long periods.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Not less than two (2) years’ experience as an automobile mechanic OR IN LIEU THEREOF an equivalent combination of experience and training totaling two (2) years

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License is a condition of initial appointment and continued employment. Must obtain a Connecticut CDL Class A or B, with the endorsements of tanker and air brakes, as a condition of continued employment within a minimum, within two years after appointment.

Salary Information $39.06/hour. 40 hours/week. Union position. One year probationary period
