Job summary

Job description

The Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, diagnosis, and safe operation of the City's fleet and equipment, including fire apparatus, public works vehicles, utility vehicles, police vehicles, and small engine equipment. This position performs general mechanical work, fleet maintenance activities, ensures compliance with safety standards, and coordinates repairs to maximize vehicle and equipment reliability.

Essential Functions

• Diagnoses, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance for the Public Work's fleet, including automotive, heavy equipment, and fire apparatus
• Inspects and repairs fire pumps, aerial devices, emergency warning systems, hydraulic systems, generators, and associated firefighting equipment (Mechanic will not operate or road test emergency vehicles)
• Develops and implements preventative maintenance schedules to ensure fleet reliability and longevity
• Troubleshoots equipment failures to minimize service interruptions and support critical infrastructure operations
• Conducts inspections and testing to identify mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational deficiencies
• Prioritizes repairs and schedules maintenance activities to support departmental and organizational operations
• Determines inventory levels, orders parts and supplies; completes cost comparisons for parts and/or service
• Determines the necessity of equipment repairs or replacement based on operational condition and performance
• Ensures compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, regulations, specifications, and standards of quality and safety
• Receives inquiries and addresses concerns from City employees and agencies regarding fleet maintenance operations
• Stays abreast of new equipment and technological trends
• Ensures the retention pond pumps remain operable during inclement weather
• Provides technical guidance, training, and oversight to mechanics, technicians, and assigned staff
• Establishes maintenance operating procedures, shop safety protocols, and quality control standards
• Maintains comprehensive records of vehicle operating expenses, maintenance activities, and other related costs
• Prepares, updates, and maintains daily reports, work orders, maintenance records, and related documentation
• Maintains cleanliness and neatness of shop; maintains assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools
• Participates in and represents the Department at meetings, conferences, and interagency discussions involving assigned functions and operations
• All employees will have a role in the City's disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as may be designated in the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or valid equivalent
• Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a diverse fleet of automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, emergency response, and specialty vehicles
• Valid Florida Driver's License
• A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate's degree or technical/vocational certification in Automotive field
• Welding, fabrication, and hydraulic system repair experience
• Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in automotive or truck systems
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification

• Knowledge of fleet management principles, preventative maintenance programs, and inventory control
• General knowledge of automotive mechanics and of tools and equipment utilized in repairs
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and industry specific software
• Ability to operate and maintain motor vehicles and required equipment and tools
• Ability to establish and maintain vehicle operating and maintenance cost records and the ability to analyze this information for the purpose of recommending equipment disposal and replacement
• Ability to identify issues and to determine repairs that are necessary

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with immediate supervisor, other City department heads and employees, elected officials, job applicants, insurance representatives, sales representatives, other outside agencies and the general public

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate a vehicle, equipment, various hand and/or power tools, etc.
• Tasks involve frequent standing, walking, climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling
• Must be able to lift, carry, pull, move, and manipulate up to forty (40) pounds with proper mechanics and equipment
• Sufficient manual dexterity to allow the use of power tools, a keyboard, and writing
• Tasks involve working with cut off wheels, saws, impact guns, torches, welders, various hand tools highly compressed air drills, chisels, and sharp tools
