Job summary

Harrison Construction Company, a CRH company, seeks a skilled mobile equipment technician to diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mixers, dump trucks, and related construction machinery in field and shop settings.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, troubleshooting electrical/hydraulic systems, and parts replacement. Willingness to travel and work irregular hours and to own essential mechanic tools is required.

  • Experience diagnosing and repairing construction equipment preferred.
  • Willingness to travel and work varied hours, including nights or weekends, as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mixers, dump trucks, and related equipment.
  • Operate service truck to job sites for remote field repairs and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Plan repair procedures and part substitutions to restore equipment functionality.
  • Follow safety policies, DOT regulations, and proper lock-out/tag-out procedures.

Position Overview

Applicants must possess the ability to diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mixers, dump trucks, mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment used in construction industries, as well as be familiar with the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline engines.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)
  • Adheres strictly to company safety and Lock‑Out‑Tag‑Out policies.
  • May operate a service truck to travel to and from equipment jobsite when performing remote repairs, lubrication and diagnostics in the field.
  • Works extended, and at times, erratic hours.
  • Adheres to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as set forth by the US Department of Transportation.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain all types of on‑road equipment, and periodically reclaim and milling machines, loaders, graders, dozers, pavers, rollers, etc.
  • Examines equipment and discusses with Shop Supervisor the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
  • Plans work procedure and/or possible solutions, such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Raises equipment, with hydraulic jack, hoist or crane, to gain access to components attached to underside of equipment.
  • Removes units or subassemblies, such as engines, transmissions, drums, seals, etc.
  • Repairs or replaces parts such as drums, seals, buckets, hydraulic pumps, electric motors, valves, pistons, rods, gears, etc.
  • Rebuilds components for engines, transmissions, drive assemblies, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, A/C, air brake, chassis, cab and body. Diagnose and repair equipment electrical systems, including ignition systems, lights, and instrument panel.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories, such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Drains fluids and oil, ensuring proper procedures for containment, sampling and/or disposal.
  • Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for products such as industrial equipment and machinery, power equipment.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education / Experience
  • One year certificate from college or technical school preferred; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements.
Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years in age or older. Must pass DOT physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Motor Vehicle Report must meet company standards.
  • Must display a professional and courteous attitude to co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned shop or jobsite ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to company safety requirements and procedures.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Attendance required according to company attendance policy to ensure crew is able to operate at normal efficiency level.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA, MSHA and/or company policy. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard‑toe) shoes, hard hat and safety glasses.
  • Must own mechanic tools required for work being performed.
  • Possess a strong drive to fulfill commitments and tremendous enthusiasm.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge / Skill Requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to think under pressure.
  • Ability or willingness to learn to operate a “smartphone” and Windows‑based computer.
Physical Requirements
  • Walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and traveling over irregular terrain.
  • Some tasks involve prolonged periods of standing and/or exposure to noise or weather, good motor coordination, finger dexterity, and color discrimination.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs. continuously, 10–25 lbs. frequently, and 25–100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid, hot, or cold environments. The employee may be exposed to vibration, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • The noise level in the work environment can be very loud.
