Job description

Purpose

Perform the duties to diagnose problems with motor vehicles, equipment and small machinery and to repair or replace defective parts.

Job Duties

The ability to perform a variety of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic adjustments and repairs on gasoline and diesel‑powered vehicles, heavy construction equipment, small construction equipment and machines. Work on motor vehicles, construction equipment or machines in the shop area or take mechanic’s truck to field location to perform services or repairs.

The ability to diagnose problems and make the appropriate adjustments, repairs or replacements to electrical, hydraulic, engine, transmission, drive train and mechanical systems.

The ability to use personal tools or common shop hand tools, hoist or crane equipment, precision mechanical tools, electronics or instruments, drill press, grinders, sanders, gas and electrical welders, power tools and other shop tools and equipment.

The ability to make major repairs and overhaul motor vehicles and construction equipment, machines, and components as required.

The ability to read and interpret equipment/part manuals and to order the required parts as needed. Consult with Service Foreman and/or equipment dealership personnel when necessary.

Analyze and detect faulty operations or defective materials and refer questionable cases to Service Foreman.

The ability to follow and observe all safety rules and regulations.

Have a valid driver’s license, drive a mechanic’s truck and may be required to have a Commercial Driver’s License, depending on weight of assigned truck.

The ability to work nights and extended shifts when projects need service personnel available.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge

The use of advanced trade mathematics together with the use of complicated equipment manuals, charts, tables or component specifications and the use of a variety of precision measuring instruments and tools. Knowledge of the operation and functions of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered motor vehicles and construction equipment and machines, and their adjustment, repair, rebuilding, or replacement of engines, transmissions, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems and other components.

Experience

Over four years and up to and including five years to become familiar with the function, adjustment and repair of a variety of vehicles and construction equipment and machines.

Initiative & Ingenuity

The ability to exercise considerable judgment to diagnose, adjust, or repair defective components, parts or systems in a variety of vehicles, equipment or machines, where only general methods are available in the making of broad decisions requiring considerable imitation and ingenuity.

Physical Demand

Moderate physical effort is required to adjust, repair or replace components and systems with occasionally lifting or moving heavy weight material (over 50 pounds) frequently in difficult work positions.

Physical Activity

Position requires the ability to climb onto machines, the ability to grasp tools, to push/pull and to have sensitivity to touch. Position requires the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and the ability to perceive sounds and receive detailed information though oral communications, and to make fine discrimination in equipment noises which may indicate mechanical problems.

Mental & Visual Demand

Continuous mental and visual attention required in adjusting or repairs. Work is repetitive and/or diversified which requires constant alertness or activity.

Responsibility for Equipment & Process

Responsible for preventing damage to equipment or waste of parts due to incorrect ordering, misuse, operation, handling or set up.

Responsibility for Material & Product

Responsible for damage to material or equipment due to incorrect handling, assembly, inspection, diagnosis, installation, maintenance, adjustment or repair.

Responsibility for Safety of Others

Normal care is necessary to prevent injury to others. An accident should it occur, would probably result in injuries such as a crushed foot, hand, loss of finger, eye, bruises, burns, and/or abrasions.

Responsibility for Work of Others

Responsible for own work.

Working Conditions

Disagreeable working conditions with exposure to seasonal temperature variances, weather, dust, fumes, grease/oil and machine noise with several elements present at the same time.
