Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is seeking an assembler/fitter to lay out, fit, align, and assemble prefabricated components prior to welding. You will perform machining operations to tight tolerances and may repair parts to restore proper tolerances while ensuring quality per procedures.

Qualifications include a high school diploma and 2 years of related education/experience; an apprentice/associate's degree with 1 year of experience is also acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Lays out, fits, aligns, and assembles prefabricated cast and forged components prior to welding.
• Performs fitting and machining operations such as straighten, grind, burr, drill, ream, and countersink materials to close tolerances.
• May repair or rework parts to restore to required tolerances and monitor quality per procedures.

The Role

Lays out, fits, aligns, and assembles prefabricated cast and forged components prior to welding, soldering, brazing, or bonding operations. Performs fitting and machining operations such as straighten, grind, burr, drill, ream, and countersink materials to close tolerances. Refers to general instructions to select equipment, set up, and lay out materials to be welded. May repair or rework parts to restore to required tolerances which have become distorted as a result of welding operations. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.

Must Have

• High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years additional education and/or related experience; Apprentice graduate/ Associate's Degree in relevant discipline and 1 year of related experience. May require certification.
