Job summary

Hy-Vee Inc. is seeking a Meat Clerk to provide prompt, friendly customer service in the Meat and Seafood Department, wrapping, trimming, stocking, and receiving merchandise. Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent experience with food safety training.
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience.
  • Ability to carry out detailed but uncomplicated written or verbal instructions and handle concrete variables.
  • Proficiency in simple addition and subtraction; copying figures, counting, and recording.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by escorting them to desired products, securing out‑of‑reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, and passing along suggestions or requests to staff.
  • Answer the telephone promptly when called upon and provide friendly, helpful service to callers, including taking customer orders.
  • Work with co‑workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Wrap, weigh, and label product.
  • Review the status and appearance of food for freshness, then stock or rotate product in cases.
  • Finish trims on steaks, roasts, and chops, and prepare restaurant‑retail cuts, including traying seafood.
  • Prepare and organize seafood items for display.
  • Understand and practice proper sanitation procedures; keep the work area clean and neat.
  • Replenish and organize coolers.
  • Report out‑of‑stock products to appropriate personnel.
  • Tray, slice, tenderize, and grind product.
  • Remove trash in a timely manner.
  • Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work on time when scheduled.
  • Deal with customers daily and vendors/suppliers on an as‑needed basis.

Reporting Relations

Accountable to District Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Operations, Perishables, Health Wellness Home; Meat Department Manager; Assistant Meat Department Manager; Seafood Department Manager; Assistant Seafood Department Manager; Service Managers.

Positions that report to the Meat Clerk: Under certain circumstances, part‑time stockers may receive direction from the Meat Clerk.

Physical Requirements

  • Perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Working Conditions
  • Continuously exposed to a cool environment and dampness.
  • Frequent noise from saws, exposure to cleaning solvents, and potential electrical shock.

Equipment Used
