Beecan Health is seeking a dedicated MDS Coordinator to join our clinical team in an in-person role in West Des Moines, IA. You will coordinate assessments, ensure compliant documentation, and drive accurate reimbursement through meticulous data handling.

You will work with RNs, LPNs, and therapy teams, using Epic, Cerner, or Athenahealth to manage MDS data, while staying current on HIPAA, CMS, and Medicare requirements.

Qualifications

  • Must hold an unencumbered Iowa RN license or LPN certificate.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with CPR certification.
  • Prior experience as a MDS Coordinator is required.
  • Minimum one year RN/LPN experience in a skilled nursing facility.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct resident assessments using the MDS tool for accurate data collection and documentation.
  • Collaborate with nursing, therapy, and medical staff to gather information for MDS completion.
  • Ensure timely submission of MDS assessments per regulatory deadlines.
  • Review medical records and care plans for accuracy before submission.
  • Maintain knowledge of HIPAA, CMS, and Medicare requirements.
  • Document assessments in EHR systems (Epic/Cerner/Athenahealth).
  • Support quality improvement via data analysis on MDS outcomes.

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented MDS Coordinator to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) process, along with expertise in clinical documentation, coding, and regulatory compliance. In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating the assessment and documentation of patient care needs in long-term care settings, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, including those established by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Your efforts will directly contribute to accurate reimbursement, quality reporting, and optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments of residents' clinical status using the MDS tool to ensure accurate data collection and documentation.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams-including nursing, therapy, and medical staff-to gather comprehensive information necessary for MDS completion.
  • Ensure timely submission of completed MDS assessments in accordance with regulatory deadlines and standards.
  • Review medical records, treatment plans, and clinical documentation to verify accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare regulations related to long-term care, HIPAA privacy standards, and Medicare requirements.
  • Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Athenahealth to document assessments and manage data efficiently.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives through data analysis related to MDS outcomes and compliance metrics.
Skills
  • Extensive knowledge of the MDS process, including ICD-10 coding, CPT coding, DRG assignment, and utilization review procedures.
  • Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems such as eClinicalWorks or Athenahealth for documentation management.
  • Strong understanding of Medicare regulations, CMS guidelines, and long-term care accreditation standards like NCQA.
  • Experience with clinical documentation improvement (CDI), utilization management, and case management practices.
  • Familiarity with hospital environments including ICU, Level I/II trauma centers, inpatient units, and outpatient settings.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review complex medical records accurately while adhering to HIPAA and state healthcare regulations.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and facilitate discharge planning or hospice care processes.
Qualifications
  • As a minimum, an unencumbered State of Iowa RN License or LPN certificate
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program and C.P.R. Certification.
  • Prior experience as a MDS Coordinator
  • One (1) year of experience as an RN or LPN in a Skilled Nursing Facility setting
