The role implements the strategic direction set by the Associate Director of Intelligence Strategy & Transformation, and collaborates closely with practice group attorneys to translate matter type strategy into comprehensive matter profiles. The Matter Intelligence Manager ensures attorneys and business professionals have access to the information they need to deliver high quality legal services and to support marketing and client development, including pitch and pursuit generation, and the pricing of legal services.

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:
  • Matter Data Enhancement: Manage the people, processes, and content involved in collecting, maintaining, and delivering experience and knowledge management data and data products. Oversee the day-to-day work required to support content users. Establish and maintain configuration and data management policies and procedures for the team, ensuring a standard and cost-effective approach to the collection and management of firm matter data. Operate Litera Foundation and comparable experience and knowledge management systems day to day, including configuration, data quality, and platform administration, within the platform strategy the Associate Director of Intelligence Strategy & Transformation owns. Oversee management of trackers and dashboards, cross-checking multiple resources to eliminate redundancies and suggest improvements.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Design and implement data validation and verification procedures to ensure data accuracy and reliability. Document data enhancement and stewardship processes and conduct root cause analysis to resolve data issues. Partner with the Intelligence Transformation Manager to identify and prioritize opportunities for automating data enhancement and stewardship functions, providing Matter Intelligence subject matter input into the firm's transformation backlog. Produce and curate knowledge management reports to facilitate insights into practice group and deal study metrics for statistical analysis, post-deal assessments, and benchmarking.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with Practice Innovation, Innovation Counsel, and Practice Engineering on collaborative projects where knowledge of matter data and practice group data needs is required, including AI use cases and practice group data collection. Act as the Matter Intelligence subject matter contact for the Intelligence Transformation Manager on technical delivery team initiatives affecting matter data. Liaise with practice group leadership, resource attorneys, marketing and client development, and pricing colleagues on data needs. Review and assess service delivery against those needs on an ongoing basis.
  • People Leadership: Serve as direct supervisor and mentor to direct reports. Provide day-to-day supervision of direct reports, ensure compliance with assigned work hours and monitor for compliance with all firm and department policies. Manage staffing coverage, review and process time logs/time off requests. Support business professional development and continued educational opportunities. In collaboration with immediate supervisor and central HR, participate in hiring, performance appraisals, counseling, termination and other employee lifecycle events. All other duties as assigned or required.
Required:

  • 5+ years of applicable experience in the field (e.g., legal knowledge resource management, experience management, practice management solutions, or legal matter data management)
  • Ability to translate and communicate business data needs to the broader data teams for implementing data products and solutions
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree

  • Experience with data extraction from legal documentation using generative AI platforms
  • Working knowledge of data lakehouse concepts, including medallion architecture and how data moves through platform layers
  • Comfort working in an Agile or sprint-based delivery environment to provide subject matter expertise for sprint planning and delivery
Competencies:

  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to drive data enhancement initiatives, influence stakeholders across practice groups and business functions and develop talent
  • Proactive problem-solving orientation with the ability to identify and resolve data-related issues without waiting to be directed
  • Excellent adaptability with the ability to adjust to changing business needs and priorities in a fast-moving legal technology environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to translate technical data concepts to non-technical audiences including attorneys and business professionals
