Job summary

South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD seeks a Department Head for Mathematics and Statistics who will also serve as a Professor. The 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible role reports to the Dean of the JJLCOE, with an anticipated start in January 2027.

The department offers BS in Mathematics and Data Science and MS/PhD programs, with active GTA/GRA opportunities. The successful candidate will lead program development, secure external funding, and advance SDSU's path toward R1

Qualifications

• PhD in mathematics, statistics, data science, or closely related field.
• Distinguished record of teaching, research, scholarship, and service eligible for tenure and Professor at SDSU.
• Evidence of effective leadership and administrative skills including budgets and personnel management.
• Experience securing competitive grants from federal, industry, or corporate sources.
• Understanding of the land-grant mission and strong written/verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead with the Dean to promote the land-grant mission and expand research in math, statistics, and data science.
• Identify future growth areas and provide organizational and administrative expertise.
• Drive strategic planning to elevate SDSU toward R1 status per Pathway to Premier 2030.
• Guide teaching and research initiatives, develop high-impact teaching strategies, and engage with stakeholders.
• Foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the university and with external partners.
