The Lawrenceville School is seeking a Math Specialist to provide individualized in-person academic support for students facing math challenges. Qualifications

Job description

The Math Specialist is responsible for providing individualized academic support to Lawrenceville students facing academic challenges in foundational math coursework. This is a fully in-person position, as the essential functions of the role require direct, on-campus engagement with students, faculty, and staff.

The Math Specialist will work collaboratively with the Educational Support team, teaching faculty, and academic advisors to provide students with individualized, evidence-based instructional strategies that support their math coursework and align with the School’s curriculum. The role requires building strong, in-person relationships with students and providing targeted learning opportunities to support their academic success; neither students nor faculty may attend these sessions virtually, in light of the potential distractions and reduced effectiveness inherent in virtual interactions.

This position follows the academic calendar, and the employee is expected to work around 10 hours per week. A flexible schedule including afternoons and evenings is required.

Responsibilities:

• Provide in-person individual and/or group instruction to identified students in Geometry, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.
• Conduct in-person meetings to assess students’ needs which requires real-time, on-campus interaction to ensure effective communication and student engagement as well as accurate assessment.
• Generate appropriate remedial assistance:

Develop self-awareness, self-advocacy, and personalized strategies to maximize learning.

Implement research-based interventions to assess and assist students with their math challenges.

Monitor and document student progress, sending weekly reports to the student, their academic advisor, and the Director of

Educational Support.

Foster a positive and engaging learning environment through direct, in-person instruction, which is essential for student

success.

• These responsibilities necessitate on-campus presence for effective support and accurate and timely assessment.
• Teach and monitor math skills that integrate into Lawrenceville’s curriculum.
• Attend on-campus professional meetings and training sessions to stay updated on best practices in math instruction and student support. Participation in these in-person meetings is critical to effective collaboration and alignment with institutional goals.
• Perform other duties as requested.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (preferably a Master’s) in Mathematics, Special Education, or a related field.
• Expertise in a variety of math-specific instructional methodologies and techniques, with a proven ability to apply these approaches to foster students' confidence and academic growth in math coursework.
• Demonstrated success in working with students with learning differences and/or academic challenges.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google GSuite tools, as well as comfort using technology and systems to document work with students. Demonstrated ability to learn and use effectively departmental and school-wide tools and databases.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Operate efficiently, learn, and adapt quickly. Ability to manage ambiguity and proactively find solutions.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• This is a fully in-person role that requires on-campus presence for all student interactions.
• Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work. Must be able to remain on their feet for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift.
• Routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, etc.
• Must be capable of using visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
• Required to talk, hear, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate students’ schedules. This includes both day and evening responsibilities.
• Must be able to lift up to 20lbs. without assistance.
• Ability to see with normal parameters.
• Operate in a professional work environment.
