Job Summary / Basic Function

Math Mentors (Developmental Math mentors) will play an important role in the success of students taking Developmental Math courses. Math Mentors will focus on supporting students in their assigned Developmental Math class, including encouraging positive behaviors like attending classes, completing assignments, talking with their instructor, persistence, connecting to resources on campus, preparing for class, etc.

Timeline

Math Mentors will be hired in fall and complete training before spring semester. Time commitment for fall is between 5-10 hours per week to complete training.

  • campus resource knowledge;
Mentoring Activities (Spring Semester)

Time commitment will be between 15-20 hours per week including time for:

  • meeting students one on one outside of class at least once per month, more as needed;
  • small group mentoring sessions;
  • providing academic and personal support to individual students regarding motivation, persistence, time management, etc.;
  • Connecting students to resources (tutoring, academic peer coaching, counseling, etc.)
  • providing support to faculty/department, like outreach to students, help with registration, academic platforms (Canvas, registration, etc.);
  • hosting events as needed (social, academic);
  • Math Mentors will participate in ongoing development by attending mentoring staff meetings, supervisory meetings and other relevant training.
Required Qualifications

Education

  • Completed one or more Developmental Math courses
  • Current Weber State student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Enrolled for 12 credit hours
  • All majors encouraged to apply
Preferred Qualifications

Experience

  • Must demonstrate an ability or desire to work effectively with a variety of students
  • Strong communication skills preferred (presenting/communicating information, actively listening, conflict management)
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Autonomous and proactive
  • Experience mentoring and/or motivating others preferred
