Job summary

SMS group seeks a Materials Manager to lead plant material control, forecasting, production planning, MRO purchasing, and inventory control. You will optimize BOMs, supplier relations, and on-time delivery while ensuring safety and environmental compliance.

The role collaborates with Supervisors, Estimators, Operations and Project Managers to support shop scheduling and cost-effective procurement. Ideal candidates have a Bachelor’s in Supply Chain or Business Management, 3+ years manufacturing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain or Business Management.
  • APICS CPIM certification preferred but not required.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing experience.
  • 2+ years in materials management.
  • Thorough knowledge of ERP planning or purchasing systems.
  • Strong analytical and written/oral communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Supervisors and Estimator to determine products and services needed for the business unit(s).
  • Request the minimum number of quotes required per the Purchasing Policy, quotes saved with PO copies.
  • Enter all Purchase Orders in GSS and ensure electronic PO folders have quotes, drawings, and instructions.
  • Ensure POs contain material type, burnout specs, machine finishes and drawings when needed.
  • Distribute copies of POs to Receiving after sending to vendors.
  • Consider safety and environmental requirements when purchasing for shop work.
  • Meet with customers and vendors to discuss parts and services needed.
  • Coordinate with Estimator for materials/services after quoting in GSS.
  • Plan material deliveries with Shop Supervisors to meet demand and schedules.
  • Investigate discrepancies between Purchasing and Receiving and adjust POs as required.
  • Manage BOM planning and expedite parts/material availability per operations plan.
  • Work with Operations and Project Managers to update BOMs, routers and lot sizes.
  • Collaborate on plant production scheduling and shop floor scheduling.
  • Ensure material availability to support on-time production and deliveries.
  • Control inventory turnover while minimizing investment.
  • Align with cycle count/WIP audits and utilize GSS effectively.
  • Monitor safety stock levels and order policies.
  • Work with suppliers on consignment, VMI and JIT programs.
  • Identify local indirect material sources and vet capabilities.
  • Manage indirect supplier selection based on total cost of ownership.
  • Support purchasing agreements with Regional Purchasing Manager goals.
  • Oversee shipping/receiving for error-free processing.
  • Analyze and identify supply constraints to support daily operations.

Summary The successful Materials Manager will assist in the management of plant material control functions, including forecasting, production planning, MRO and indirect material purchasing, shipping and receiving, and inventory control. What you’ll do
  • Work with Supervisors and Estimator to determine products and services needed for the business unit(s).
  • Request the minimum number of quotes required per the Purchasing Policy, the quotes will be saved with a copy of the purchase order.
  • Make sure all Purchase Orders are entered in GSS as accurately as possible and electronic PO folders have all relevant material in them including vendor quotes, burn-out drawings, and any special instructions.
  • Make sure purchase orders contain all relevant information for material type, burnout specifications, machine finishes and drawings attached when needed.
  • After being sent to the vendor, buyer will make sure a copy is sent to Receiving.
  • Must consider Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental requirements when purchasing material or services for work in the shop.
  • Meet with customers and vendors as required to discuss parts and services needed.
  • Work with Estimator when obtaining material and services required for a job won after creating a quote in GSS.
  • Work with Shop Supervisors for scheduling and planning of material deliveries to meet customer demand and shop schedules.
  • Investigate any discrepancies between Purchasing and Receiving and revise Purchase Orders if required.
  • Manage and maintain planning of bill of materials and expedite purchased parts and raw material availability in response to operational plans.
  • Work with Operations and Project Managers to update bill of materials, routers and lot sizes.
  • Collaborate with Operations on the plant production scheduling functions and shop floor scheduling.
  • Provide material availability to support on time production and deliveries of customer sales orders to meet plant goals.
  • Control plant inventory to optimize turnover and minimize investment.
  • Align with the cycle count program and WIP audits to obtain accurate inventory values while effectively utilizing Global Shop Solutions (GSS) software.
  • Monitor safety stock levels and establish order policies to balance inventory availability with low levels of investment.
  • Work with suppliers to establish consignment, Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) programs and Just In Time (JIT) programs to support on time delivery goals.
  • Identify local sources of indirect materials, equipment, services or supplies and vet capabilities.
  • Manage the indirect supplier selection process based on total cost of ownership (i.e. price, quality, support, capacity, reliability, etc.).
  • Support, administer and comply with purchasing agreements or contracts with suppliers in support of Regional Purchasing Manager savings goals and requirements.
  • Oversee the shipping and receiving function to ensure error-free processing of shipments expeditiously.
  • Analyze and identify supply constraints to ensure daily operational support.
What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain or Business Management
  • APICS Certification (CPIM) preferred but not required
  • 3+ years of manufacturing experience preferred
  • 2+ years in materials management preferred
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of ERP planning or purchasing systems
  • Must be proficient in analytical problem-solving techniques and possess strong written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and must be able to work with minimal supervision
