The Materials Engineer will support a major Packaging and Handling (P&H) assessment effort for Northeast facilities. This role will focus initially on evaluating materials, reviewing documentation, and developing packaging/handling requirements for incoming parts. Following the completion of this project, the role will transition into steady‑state responsibilities involving maintaining P&H requirements, incoming material testing, review of Certificates of Analysis, and verification of compliance to specifications. The position requires strong analytical skills, collaboration with subject matter experts, and hands‑on laboratory experience.

What You Will Do
  • Evaluate drawings and specifications of incoming parts to determine appropriate packaging and handling requirements based on material characteristics.
  • Engage with subject matter experts to understand material usage, environmental sensitivities, and manufacturing considerations.
  • Review material documentation, specifications, and technical data sheets; develop recommendations based on engineering judgment.
  • Clearly document findings and support integration of packaging/handling requirements into formal coding and standards.
  • Follow established protocols and contribute to the development of new test plans, fixtures, and custom test setups.

As the project transitions to steady‑state responsibilities, you will also:

  • Conduct hands‑on material testing using standard laboratory techniques and equipment to verify compliance with required specifications.
  • Review Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and confirm adherence to material, chemical, and performance requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies between COAs and specifications in collaboration with suppliers, quality, and engineering teams.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of incoming inspections, validation activities, and material test results.
Qualifications You Must Have
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis, evaluating plots and experimental data sets, performing statistical analysis, and generating technical summaries
  • Hands‑on experience performing general wet laboratory procedures, such as sample preparation, dilutions, and safe handling of chemicals within a laboratory environment
  • Ability to troubleshoot analytical instrument problems, perform analysis, and interpret data
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Prefer
  • Background in metallurgy, materials science, chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with material specifications, coatings, finishes, or environmental durability assessments.
  • Familiarity with packaging and environment requirements for sensitive or complex hardware.
  • Hands‑on experience with laboratory testing techniques and equipment.
  • Strong documentation skills and ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional subject matter experts.
