Job summary

The State of Iowa - Executive Branch, through the Iowa Department of Transportation, is seeking a Transportation Engineer Associate to support the District 1 Materials Office in Ames. The role involves learning to inspect, sample, and test project materials, operating the district materials testing lab, and providing technical advice to a broad range of stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering or related field.
• Verification of graduation with major coursework in civil/transportation engineering or related field.
• New hires must complete bachelor’s degree within 10 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Oversee materials inspection, sampling, and testing activities.
• Inspect and monitor project-specific asphalt, PCC, HMA plants, and aggregate facilities.
• Provide highway materials technical assistance to DOT staff, counties, and contractors.
• Participate in project materials audits and Independent Assurance Program (IAP).
• Contribute to technical committees to improve specs, processes, and policies.
• Review quality control plans from materials suppliers and manufacturers.
• Perform special assignments at District Materials Engineer’s direction.
