Job summary

Garmin International seeks a Materials Engineer 2 - Metals at its U.S. headquarters in the Kansas City area to lead CMF initiatives across product teams.

You will drive CMF development from concept through launch, applying metals knowledge and material science tools to deliver robust, scalable solutions. You will collaborate with design, reliability, and manufacturing groups, maintain CMF verification processes, and communicate findings clearly to non-technical partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering plus 2+ years relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • GPA 3.0+ typical; strong academic record expected.
  • Experience selecting CMF characterization tools and analyzing results.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver CMF solutions from requirements to product launch.
  • Maintain knowledge of material innovations and technology.
  • Develop CMF verification processes and a CMF database.
  • Define, execute and communicate CMF exploration results.
  • Address root causes of CMF-related quality/moufacturing issues.
  • Foster ongoing CMF knowledge across the organization.

Overview

We are seeking a full-timeMaterials Engineer 2 - Metals at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering CMF solutions for products covering all market segments.

Essential Functions
  • Deliver CMF solutions from initial requirements to product launch
  • Maintain industry knowledge of advances in material innovation and technology
  • Develop CMF verification processes and develop/maintain a CMF database
  • Define, execute, and communicate results of CMF explorations
  • Determine root cause and deliver solutions for product quality and manufacturing issues related to CMF
  • Drive continued education and development of materials-related knowledge throughout the organization
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science, Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related field AND a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrates ability to select CMF characterization/analysis tools (ex. SEM, DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIR, SMD/EDS, XRF, XPS, TEM, AFM, etc.)
  • Demonstrates knowledge, education, experience and/or training necessary to use tools such as Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote
  • A curiosity for new CMF innovation, technology, process, design and future living
  • Open to pushing new boundaries, work extremely well in multi-disciplinary global teams, able to speak up, anticipate technical challenges and plan ahead
  • Looks beyond the immediate problem and generates new/innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Be a strong communicator, sharing technical knowledge with non-technical partners in a clear and meaningful way (also challenges and constraints)
  • Strong project management skills to drive new technology programs to deliver verified solutions from concept to manufacturing
  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing methods (ex. metals, ceramics, inorganic coatings, and more)
  • Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and proficient presentation skills
  • Must be team-oriented, possess a positive attitude, and work respectfully with others
Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Experience working in the consumer electronics industry
