Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking skilled M&P Engineers to join the Lunar Permanence team. You will work on crew-facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module, providing broad support for aerospace materials, and leading material characterization and qualification efforts.

Applicants should have a MS in a relevant field and 8+ years of M&P experience on crewed space programs, with strong knowledge of NASA standards and material data. Travel to vendor sites may be required.

Qualifications

  • MS degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years M&P engineering experience on a crewed space program.
  • In-depth knowledge of NASA cleanliness, contamination, toxicity, and life support system materials requirements.
  • Familiarity with NASA-STD-6001, toxicological assessments, and crew hardware standards.
  • Familiarity with fluid compatibility of materials, especially for water systems.
  • Experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification.
  • Knowledge of MMPDS, MAPTIS, CMH-17.
  • Ability to travel to support development/testing.

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

We are looking talented M&P Engineers to join our growing Lunar Permanence team and build a strong M&P Engineering division dedicated to safely and successfully delivering the Lunar objectives at Blue Origin.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide broad support for aerospace grade materials and processes including: aluminum, steel, inconel, copper, bronze, composite; forming, extrusion, plating, coating, friction welding, brazing, anodization, passivation, solid and sandwich laminates.
  • Own material and process requirement implementation and verification for crew facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module.
  • Lead and coordinate material characterization and qualification efforts related to crew facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module.
  • Review production drawing for large complex assemblies systematically, documenting the review to the established requirements
  • Responsible for M&P signatory release of engineering drawings for parts and assemblies
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external M&P efforts, including development of specifications, supplier qualification, First Article Inspection, mechanical testing, and customer-facing updates
  • Lead the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification
  • Work with cross-functional teams within the Lunar organization and other business units.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a M.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ Years of demonstrated M&P Engineering experience on a crewed space program
  • In-depth knowledge of NASA cleanliness, contamination, toxicity, and life support system materials requirements, associated standards, characterization methods, and industry best practices
  • Strong familiarity with NASA-STD-6001, toxicological, fungal, and microbial assessments, and other related NASA requirements addressing crew facing hardware in a pressurized space crew module.
  • Strong familiarity with fluid compatibility of materials, in particular for water systems and corrosion prevention and control.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes
  • Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis (e.g.MMPDS, MAPTIS, CMH-17)
  • Experience organizing and managing materials and process-related data in a company accessible database
  • Ability to travel to support development and testing opportunities at other Blue Origin and vendor sites.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Desired:
  • Ability to assess soft goods, foams, adhesives, coatings, flammability risks, and toxic atmosphere, with working knowledge of high oxygen concentration environments on materials.
  • Ph.D. in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing or Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Experience owning cleanliness and contamination control requirements for crewed space vehicles.
Base Pay Range for:

CO applicants is $133,500.00 - $186,898.95WA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20
