Job summary

Blue Origin is seeking a materials engineer to join a cross-functional team addressing material challenges in spaceflight systems. The role involves selecting materials, reviewing designs, and developing manufacturing processes for metallic and non-metallic hardware to meet rigorous engineering goals.

Candidates should have a B.S. in a related field with strong experience in material characterization, failure analysis, and processing methods.

Qualifications

  • Broad experience in metallic materials (super alloys, aluminum, titanium) and their processing (forging, casting, forming, brazing, welding).
  • Experience with non-metallic hardware (o-rings, seals, lubricants).
  • Knowledge of material characterization and failure modes (corrosion, failure investigation, thermal degradation).
  • Ability to break down complex problems into traceable tasks and communicate project status concisely.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborating as part of a hardworking team to address material challenges in various spaceflight systems.
  • Reviewing production drawings for large, complex assemblies to ensure optimal material selection and process implementation.
  • Developing, documenting, and optimizing manufacturing processes for both metallic and non-metallic hardware.
  • Selecting materials and defining design requirements to meet engineering, structural, and program goals.
  • Working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including quality, design, structures, thermal, integration, and manufacturing, to optimize overall system design and performance.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree or higher in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymer engineering, welding engineering, geology/geosciences and mining engineering or related field.
  • Will have earned their degree within the last year and able to start by Fall 2026.
  • Broad experience in metallic materials such as super alloys, aluminums/ titaniums and their associated processing (e.g. forging, casting, forming, brazing, welding, etc.); non-metallic (e.g. o-rings, seals, lubricants) hardware; material characterization and failure modes (corrosion, failure investigation, thermal degradation, etc.); breaking down complex problems into traceable tasks and concisely communicating project status.
  • Relevant internship/co-op and/or hands-on experience that demonstrates development of both technical skills as well as leadership qualities.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programs.
  • Flexible and adaptable mindset.
  • Self-driven with the ability to seek out requirements with minimal direction.
Desired Qualifications
  • MS in materials science and engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, polymer engineering, welding engineering, geology/geosciences and mining engineering or related technical subject area.
  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture) of metallic and soft materials.
  • Familiarity and interest in at least one of the following areas: friction stir welding and spin forming; mining and geophysical exploration; metallurgy and how it relates to processes such as casting and forging; metallic additive manufacturing (laser power bed) and its application to production hardware.

Base Pay Range for: WA applicants is $81,313.00 - $113,837.85

  • Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification (obtained before onboarding), Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing, vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training.
  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical.
