Job summary

Progress Rail, A Caterpillar Company in Fridley, MN, is hiring a Material Handler to support receiving, stocking, kitting, shipping, and cycle counting. This role operates forklifts, moves materials for locomotives, and maintains inventory accuracy in a production environment at the Northtown Minneapolis facility.

The ideal candidate has at least 6 months of material handling experience, basic PC data entry skills, and the ability to work any shift with overtime as required.

• Minimum 6 months distribution/material handling experience.
• Forklift operation experience preferred.
• Basic PC/data entry skills.

• Able to stand for long periods and perform manual tasks.

Responsibilities

• Operate forklift to move materials and load/unload as needed.
• Receive, identify, unload, and store materials/parts in inventory.
• Identify, pull from inventory, and transport materials for locomotives.
• Maintain awareness of packaging areas to ensure timely supply.
• Inspect and document safety checks for material handling equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

Key Job Elements

• Operates industrial forklift to perform material handling assignments;
• Receives, identifies and unloads materials/parts and stores in inventory;
• Identifies, draws from inventory and transports material, parts and equipment associated with locomotives;
• Familiarizes self with material packaging areas to assure prompt delivery and adequate supply of required items;
• Inspects and completes reports related to safe operation and maintenance of material handling equipment prior to operation;
• Operate all equipment in safe manner;
• Assists in other areas and duties as assigned by supervision.

Education / Training

• High School Diploma or equivalent.

Qualifications And Experience

• Minimum 6 months distribution/material handling or equivalent;
• Previous forklift operation experience desired;
• Basic knowledge of PC for data entry;
• Must be able to work any shift;
• Must be able to work overtime when deemed required;
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time;
• Must be able to team lift up to 55 lbs.; must be able to push and pull up to 125 lbs.; frequent bending and reaching is required.

Essential And Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Must be able to lift and carry up to 55lbs, push and pull up to 125b;
• Motion – Constant walking Frequent and sustained bending, crouching, stopping, kneeing, squatting and overhead reaching and climbing ladders;
• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and hear audible alarms;
• Work Environment – Works on varied surfaces, concrete floors, and gravel, rail car and locomotive floors. Works at varied heights from floor level to tops of locomotives. Work in confined spaces. Non-temperature control environment, all weather conditions with high noise and high dust levels;
• Emotional Demands – Due to the working environment, noise, dust, personal protective equipment, employee must be comfortable working alone;
• Safety – Safety Sensitive positions because it works in and around active tracks, rail cars, locomotives, and other moving equipment. Employee must abide by all safety protocols, health/medical screenings and utilize all required PPE. Included but not limited to metatarsal boots, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, aprons, ear protection, etc.
