Position: Material Handler DC Retail

Department: Donated Goods Retail

Reports to: Production Supervisor CP/Store Manager

Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

To perform a variety of material handling duties and responsibilities to ensure the consistent flow of materials throughout the donated goods and retail division. Duties vary and material handlers may be assigned assist drivers, work within warehouse/workshops, handle baling duties, and move materials utilizing hand and power equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Loads and unloads trucks; uses stacker to unload gaylords of unprocessed wares, textile packaway, and hangers. Places gaylords in appropriate areas on processing floor. Loads trucks with gaylords of processed wares, textiles, and recyclable items. Sprays pillows with disinfectant according to procedures.
  • Accurately completes truck manifest forms.
  • Maintains a clean and organized dock area. Covers dumpster with tarp at the end of each day. Places phone calls for dumpster removal on a regular basis. Removes snow and ice during winter months.
  • Assists processing operation to assure steady flow of material to keep production lines running efficiently.
  • Assists in ordering daily shipments and in the inventory of supplies.
  • Receives goods from the general public; to include, but not be limited to: Greets and assists donors by providing information; unloads donations; offers and provides receipts, determines what is acceptable according to criteria; rejects unusable items tactfully; as per training, provides tax information per guidelines; maintains excellent public relations at all times; sorts donations into proper containers and removes trash; completes all necessary paperwork such as daily donor logs, donor receipts, etc.; keeps donation site clear and clean at all times.
  • Presents an appropriate appearance and good manners to the general public.
  • Contributes to the organization by supporting additional tasks and projects as needed.
  • Promotes an environment of workplace safety. Ensures that duties are performed in a safe manner and safety requirements are adhered to.
  • Communicates progress, problems, and concerns to the Production Supervisor CP/Store Manager.
Education and Experience
  • No formal education necessary.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older due to the demands of the position, to ensure full availability for all required work shifts including the need for flexible scheduling across all store operating hours, and to meet specific compliance requirements related to state and federal child labor laws.
Skills/Abilities/Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write and perform simple math.
  • Must present a neat appearance and have the ability to communicate effectively with general public.
  • Ability to walk and stand for a full day.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, crouch, reach, and bend.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work in all weather extremes.
  • Ability to work around dust, dirt, fumes and varied noise levels.
  • Possess forklift certification and/or willingness to become certified.
  • Must be able to work with power equipment such as forklift, pallet jacks, trash compactors, balers and operate equipment following all safety guidelines at all times.
  • Must have the flexibility to work overtime and varied hours to include Saturdays and Sundays.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to push and pull various carts requiring a force of 50 pounds a distance of 150 feet for 25% of the shift.
  • Ability to push and pull manual pallet jacks with gaylords or other material requiring an initial force of 60 pounds and distance of 100 feet for 25% of the shift.
  • Ability to push and pull the speed lift requiring an initial force of 60 pounds a distance of 20 feet up to four times per shift.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds from ground level to waist level frequently for more than 75% of the shift.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds from ground level to waist level once per shift.
  • Ability to step up 24 inches at a time onto forklifts and/or truck cab steps for 10% of the shift.
  • Visual and hearing acuity (with correction) that meets standard vision and hearing test criteria.
    • NOTE: This applies to powered industrial equipment operators only
  • Possession of forklift license or ability to become certified as a forklift operator.
  • Ability to stand continuously for more than 75% of the shift.
  • Ability to bend, kneel and stoop to open and close doors and secure loads for 10% of the shift.
