Job summary

Carter Lumber is seeking a Material Handler to perform receiving, inventory control, staging, and loading of architectural millwork materials. You will verify shipments, stock materials, and ensure accurate documentation for transfers and cycle counts.

You will operate forklifts after training, maintain clean, organized storage areas, and support production flow by staging materials for work centers. Join a safety‑minded team committed to quality and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Experience in material-handling, warehouse, shipping/receiving, or manufacturing is preferred.
  • Ability to read work orders, shipping documents, and production paperwork.
  • Basic math, counting, measuring, and inventory-recording with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain authorization to operate forklifts and related equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize work, communicate discrepancies clearly, and work safely in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Unload deliveries, verify materials against PO and packing slips.
  • Inspect materials for quantity, specification, damage, and discrepancies.
  • Document shortages or damages and communicate with Purchasing and Production.
  • Label and store materials preserving lot/color/finish when required.
  • Perform receiving, transfer, issue, and cycle-count entries in inventory systems.
  • Keep storage areas organized and protect materials from damage.
  • Review work orders and prep materials for production sequencing.
  • Pick, count, and stage materials by job and sequence for release.
  • Replenish production areas and move WIP between processes without damage.

Job description

A Carter Architectural Millwork Material Handler is responsible for performing the physical tasks involved in the receiving, checking, picking and loading of material to and from trucks and warehouse. Ensures store shipments are assembled correctly and material is restocked to and from warehouse areas. A strong belief in the mission and goals of the company are necessary to this position.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Previous material-handling, warehouse, shipping/receiving, or manufacturing experience is preferred.
  • Ability to read work orders, bills of material, labels, packing slips, and basic production documentation.
  • Basic math, counting, measuring, and inventory-recording skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain company authorization to operate applicable powered industrial trucks and material-handling equipment.
  • Ability to prioritize assignments, work at a productive pace, and communicate discrepancies clearly.
  • Dependable, safety-minded, and able to work effectively as part of a manufacturing team.
Responsibilities of the Position:

Receiving and Inventory Control

  • Unload inbound deliveries and verify materials against purchase orders, packing slips, and receiving documentation.
  • Inspect sheet goods, lumber, laminates, solid-surface materials, hardware, and other supplies for correct quantity, specification, visible damage, and shipping discrepancies.
  • Document shortages, overages, substitutions, or damaged material and promptly communicate exceptions to Purchasing and the Production Supervisor.
  • Label, identify, and put away materials in assigned locations while preserving job, lot, color, grain, and finish identification where required.
  • Complete accurate receiving, transfer, issue, return, and cycle-count transactions using CAM's designated inventory and production systems.
  • Maintain organized storage areas and protect materials from moisture, impact, contamination, warping, and other preventable damage.

Production Staging and Material Flow

  • Review work orders, bills of material, cut lists, and production priorities to determine material and component requirements.
  • Pick, count, and stage materials by job and production sequence; verify item, quantity, size, color, and revision before release to the work center.
  • Replenish production areas and move work-in-process between machining, assembly, finishing, quality, and shipping without damaging parts or disrupting identification.
  • Return unused materials to the correct inventory location and segregate nonconforming, damaged, or unidentified material for review.
  • Support inventory counts and investigate location or quantity discrepancies with Purchasing and Production.

Shipping and Load Preparation

  • Verify finished products and loose materials against the shipping list before packaging, staging, or loading.
  • Package, pad, wrap, label, crate, and secure products to prevent movement or damage during handling and transportation.
  • Stage shipments in the planned loading and delivery sequence and clearly identify each job, area, room, or installation phase.
  • Safely load and unload trucks while protecting finished architectural millwork and maintaining clear documentation of transferred items.

Equipment, Safety, and Workplace Organization

  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, carts, hoists, and other material-handling equipment only after completing required training and receiving company authorization.
  • Perform required pre-use equipment inspections and report defects; remove unsafe equipment from service in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain clear aisles, racks, docks, exits, and work areas and follow load-capacity, stacking, lifting, and material-securing requirements.
  • Use required personal protective equipment, follow CAM safety procedures, and immediately report hazards, incidents, near misses, or damaged materials.
  • Participate in daily coordination, continuous-improvement, and housekeeping activities that support a safe and efficient manufacturing operation.
