Job summary

Merchants Metals is seeking an experienced Material Handler/Forklift Driver in Des Moines, IA. You will accurately receive and store products, move materials to storage areas, and maintain yard safety and organization.

Responsibilities include operating forklift, labeling, packing, reading work orders, and ensuring inventory integrity. Must be able to work in varying weather and overtime as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Forklift experience required.
• Able to read a measuring tape.
• Loading/unloading experience preferred.
• General understanding of safety protocols.
• Attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Move freight, stock, or other materials to and from storage or production areas, loading docks, delivery vehicles, or containers.
• Operate forklift and other warehouse equipment in a safe and efficient manner while meeting productivity and quality expectations.
• Perform labeling, sorting, wrapping, and packing of materials.
• Read work orders and determine work assignments or material or equipment needs.
• Transport products to storage areas using proper equipment and efficiently stack and store product.
• Record numbers of units handled or moved using daily production sheets or work tickets.
• Install protective devices, such as bracing, padding, or strapping, to prevent shifting or damage to items
• Maintain equipment storage areas to ensure that inventory is protected.
• Carry needed tools or supplies from storage or trucks and return them after use.
• Follow established safety procedures when performing tasks and/or working with equipment.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Provide excellent customer service.
• Must be able to work overtime as required.
• Must be comfortable working outside and inside for this role and through different seasons, winter and summer.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Material Handler/forklift driver is responsible for accurately receiving and storing products to meet company standards of safety, productivity, and quality. This position is also responsible for moving materials to storage areas as well as the maintenance and upkeep of the yard.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Forklift prior experience is required.
• Be able to use and read a measuring tape.
• Loading/Unloading experience is highly preferred.
