Job summary

Greenville County Commission On Alcohol & Drug Abuse seeks an experienced peer support specialist to assist clients in outpatient services, including those in MAT programs for opioid use disorder. The role emphasizes early recovery, linkage to services, and engagement with community resources in Greenville, SC.

Under supervision, the specialist delivers group and individual sessions, promotes referrals, and helps clients navigate recovery pathways within a trauma-informed framework.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma and at least 3 years continuous recovery from a substance use disorder.
• Must be able to become certified as Peer Support Specialist through OSUS.
• Knowledge of and experience with community recovery resources.

Responsibilities

• Promote peer support services and referrals to 12-step programs and community resources.
• Develop methods to increase client retention.
• Develop contacts with local and state human services agencies to raise awareness of available services.
• Complete post-discharge recovery check-ins to support continued recovery and linkage to services.
• Present to MAT clients and the community on benefits of peer support for opioid use disorder.
• Provide peer support focused group sessions and individual sessions as part of treatment plans.
• Support engagement with MAT for opioid use disorder after leaving the Lotus Program.
• Assist with community outreach and maintain relationships with agencies.

Job Details: Level: Experienced, Job Location: Cleveland St - Greenville, SC 29607, Position Type: Full Time, Under the supervision of the Manager of Outpatient Services, this position performs peer support services to clients engaged in Outpatient Services including- clients with opioid use disorder who may be participating in the MAT program, individuals in the community seeking assistance with general substance use disorder, and those who may be seeking assistance with connection to MAT services for opioid use disorder. This includes support in the process of integrating into a community recovery program. Overall position objective is to assist clients in early recovery to promote and enhance long-term recovery goals. No supervisory requirements

JOB DUTIES

• Promote peer support services to include orientation to 12 step etc recovery groups, community agency referrals as needed including primary healthcare providers, vocational services and other available services.
• Develop methods to increase client retention.
• Develop and maintain contacts with local and state human services agencies to increase awareness of available services.
• Completes post discharge recovery check-ins with clients to assist in continued recovery efforts and linkage to needed services.
• Develop and make presentation(s) to MAT clients and individuals in the community seeking services related to opioid use disorder to discuss benefits of receiving peer support.
• Provides agency peer support focused group session to assist with clients awaiting admission to additional treatment services including engagement with MAT for assistance with opioid use disorder
• Provides services to clients during treatment services as ordered on the Treatment Plan or other Plan of Service which will include group and individual sessions.
• Provides peer support services as needed for clients living in the Villas of Serenity Place, Lotus Program as well as individuals who wish to continue engagement with MAT for medication assistance with opioid use disorder after leaving the Lotus Program.
• Assists with community outreach programs.
• Maintains effective working relationships with agencies via case management and community liaison activities.
• Actively supports ERI values of acknowledgment, commitment, openness, celebration, and humility.
• Actively support a trauma informed and responsive work environment as demonstrated in the 5 core values of safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.
• Actively supports and implements Motivational Interviewing as the program’s core evidence-based practice.
• Prepares, maintains and/or processes various reports and records such as monthly reports, etc.
• Serves on Commission committee(s) as needed.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Practical knowledge of peer to peer support, principles, and techniques
• Knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of substance use disorders
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, staff and other agencies
• Strong knowledge of community resources
• Ability to communicate clearly through both written and oral reports
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to handle crisis situations

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

• High School Diploma and at least 3 years continuous recovery from a substance use disorder. Must have knowledge of and experience with community recovery resources and basic computer skills. Successful candidate must be able to become certified as Peer Support Specialist through OSUS.
