Job summary

City of Delray Beach seeks a skilled fleet mechanic to diagnose, repair and maintain fire, rescue, and heavy equipment including trucks, pumps and aerial apparatus. You will lead a work group, schedule tasks, and ensure safety and quality in a DOT-regulated environment.

Minimum qualifications include high school diploma, five years of master-level repair experience, a Class B CDL with airbrake, ASE Master/ EVT certifications, and EVT certification within one year.

  • Must comply with ASE certification program for Master Medium/Heavy Duty Truck rating.
  • Must have or obtain EVT Certification Commission certification in Fire Apparatus and Ambulance within one year.
  • Master EVT and ASE Automotive certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, test, diagnose, adjust, repair and service fire and pump apparatus, aerial truck hydraulic systems, fire-fighting equipment and rescue units, and associated equipment.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on hydraulic and air brakes including ABS, engines, electrical/electronics, hydraulics, transmissions and suspensions.
  • Overhaul, service and repair accessories and systems in heavy equipment and fire apparatus.
  • Respond to emergency calls and participate in on-call program.
  • Quality check work and supervise subordinate personnel as needed.
  • Use tools, hoists, and lifting equipment; order parts and input inventory.

Perform a broad range of difficult technical work in the service, diagnosis and repair to all systems of specialized light, medium and heavy-duty gas and diesel-powered cars and trucks, medium and heavy-duty fire equipment and apparatus, including rescue units, and associated equipment: gasoline and diesel powered heavy equipment and components and ancillary equipment of varying makes and models. Assist in work scheduling, planning, coordination and prioritizing. Acts as a team leader for assigned group. Work is performed under general supervision.

Pay commensurate with qualifications and experience

Bonus of up to 15% based on current certifications held

Fleet mechanics who obtain three (3) Automotive Service Council (ASE) Certifications shall receive a bonus of five percent (5%) of gross pay per pay period.

An employee who obtains a total of six (6) ASE certifications shall receive a total bonus of ten percent (10%) of gross pay per pay period.

Upon obtaining ten (10) ASE Certifications an employee shall be paid the ASE Incentive of fifteen percent (15%) of gross pay per pay period

  • Troubleshoot, test, diagnose, adjust, repair and service fire and pump apparatus, aerial truck hydraulic systems, fire-fighting equipment and rescue units, a variety of cars, medium and heavy-duty trucks, heavy equipment, tractors, loaders, trailers, equipment and components.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance in the following areas: hydraulic and air brakes including ABS systems, gasoline and diesel engines, advanced electrical and on-board computers and multi-plexing electronics systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, exhaust, axle and suspensions, fire pumps and aerial fire apparatus.
  • Overhaul, service, and repair accessories, such as hydraulic PTO's, compressed air, vacuum and electric control, systems and components.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the construction, design, repair and adjustment of a wide variety of specialized medium/heavy duty trucks and equipment; fire equipment, pumps, and apparatus.
  • Responds to emergency calls and performs vehicle, equipment, and apparatus repairs as needed, participating in the on-call program.
  • Test drives apparatus and other vehicles and equipment for diagnosis and confirmation of repairs; delivers and picks up equipment.
  • Quality check at peer level, work performed in the wing.
  • Support and assist in the work of any subordinate personnel, checking work for accuracy and quality, may evaluate work performance of subordinates.
  • Perform precision adjustment and calibration using specialty instruments as required.
  • Use hand and power tools, hoists, and lifting equipment.
  • Order parts for repairs as needed and provide input for inventory of needed parts.
  • Provide input in areas of certifications for new and replacement tools equipment and refurbishes existing equipment, as requested.
  • Ability to use personal computer and associated fleet software.
  • Thorough knowledge of the usual types of tools and equipment, as well as the special tools, gouges, machinery, and analyzing equipment used in the repair, servicing and maintenance of gas and diesel driven equipment and fire apparatus or other specialized equipment.
  • Ability to detect by inspection any worn, defective or improperly adjusted parts of the assembly.
  • Ability to lift articles weighing 50 pounds.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep accurate and timely records of repair and service operations.
  • High school graduate or an equivalency diploma.
  • Five (5) years' experience performing master level repair work.
  • Must possess a Class B CDL with airbrake endorsement or obtain it within six months of hire.
  • Must comply with ASE certification program for Master Medium/Heavy Duty Truck rating.
  • Must have or obtain within one (1) year of hire EVT Certification Commission certification in Fire Apparatus and Ambulance.
  • Master EVT and ASE Automotive certifications are preferred.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

Physically able to stand, walk, sit, climb to heights greater than 100 feet on aerial equipment, Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction) with correct color vision. Must be able to wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shoe/boots, hearing protectors, welder's helmet and gloves. Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid). Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to lift articles weighing 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposure to extreme temperatures, electricity, height, noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, gasoline, diesel fuel, oils of varying types, irritants, carbon monoxide and various cleaning solutions. Works inside and outside in various weather conditions.
