Job summary

South Portland School Department is seeking a Licensed Master Electrician to install, troubleshoot and repair electrical systems across district facilities. Candidates should have 3–5 years of experience, read schematics, and adhere to safety and code requirements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three to five years' experience as a Licensed Master Electrician.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification as a Master Electrician by the Maine Electricians Examining Board.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics, drawings and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting high voltage and low voltage systems.
  • Familiar with safety regulations and codes.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Performs skilled work to include installations, troubleshooting and repairs of power, lighting and low voltage systems within the South Portland School District and performs preventive maintenance on electrical components according to the National Electrical and Fire Codes. All work is performed with the intent to ensure a safe, clean and fully functional physical environment that is conducive to learning for staff, students and community members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Prepares, assembles, installs, inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical equipment and systems throughout all School District facilities.
  • Plans, schedules, and performs the preventive maintenance and technical repair of department facilities and equipment utilizing drawings, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and other specifications; determines work sequence.
  • Inspects School buildings and facilities for electrical repair and maintenance needs; schedules and inspects work of contractors; relays any issues to Director of Facilities and Grounds.
  • Receives work orders and performs and documents completion; regarding electrical systems.
  • Ensures compliance with local, city, and state electrical codes, safety rules, and regulations.
  • Orders electrical material and supplies; tracks inventory.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Maintains and repairs emergency power generation electrical systems.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of three to five years' experience as a Licensed Master Electrician.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification as a Master Electrician by the Maine Electricians Examining Board.
  • Significant experience working with electrical and electronic systems and components including planning additions or modifications.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting high voltage and low voltage systems.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics, drawing and blueprints.
  • Skill in the use of hand, power, and diagnostic tools applicable to trade.
  • Understanding of all safety precautions applicable to trade.
  • Familiar with all safety, electrical, state, federal and local regulations, codes and laws applicable to this position.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to carry up to a 40-pound load for up to three minutes at a time and perform repetitive arm, shoulder, and leg motions including overhead motions for greater than ten minutes at a time.
  • Ability to stand and walk throughout a standard eight-hour shift and to climb stairs and ladders on a regular and routine basis while carrying equipment.
  • Ability to work alone without direct supervision, completing complex tasks and as a contributing member of a maintenance team.
