Job description

Meritus Medical Center
Hagerstown, MD 21742, USA

Description
Massage Therapist – Hospital-Based
Bring Comfort, Relief & Healing to the Patient Experience

Massage therapy can make a meaningful difference when patients are experiencing pain, anxiety, limited mobility, or the stress that often comes with illness and hospitalization.

We are seeking a compassionate and clinically minded Massage Therapist to join our interdisciplinary healthcare team. In this unique hospital-based role, you’ll provide therapeutic massage to patients with a wide range of medical needs, adapting your approach to each individual’s condition, treatment plan, comfort level, and goals.

This is an opportunity to take your massage therapy practice beyond the traditional setting and become part of a collaborative care team focused on treating the whole person.

What You’ll Do

As a Hospital-Based Massage Therapist, you will:

  • Provide therapeutic massage to patients in inpatient and/or outpatient healthcare settings
  • Support pain management, stress reduction, relaxation, mobility, and overall well-being
  • Review each patient’s medical history and current clinical condition before treatment
  • Modify massage techniques based on diagnoses, precautions, contraindications, medical devices, and treatment plans
  • Monitor patient comfort and response throughout treatment and adjust your approach as needed
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, and other members of the care team
  • Communicate relevant observations, patient tolerance, and treatment outcomes
  • Document services accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Follow hospital standards for patient privacy, infection prevention, safety, and equipment cleaning
  • Educate patients, families, and staff about the appropriate benefits and limitations of therapeutic massage
  • Support integrative care, staff wellness, and other special programs as needed

Depending on program needs, you may have the opportunity to support patients in areas such as medical-surgical care, oncology, rehabilitation, maternity, palliative care, and employee wellness.

What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited massage therapy program
  • Current state massage therapy license in good standing
  • 1–2 years of clinical massage therapy experience; healthcare or medical-setting experience preferred
  • Current CPR/BLS certification or ability to obtain upon hire
  • Knowledge of massage contraindications and precautions related to common medical conditions
We'd Especially Love to Hear From You If You Have
  • Previous experience in a hospital or healthcare environment
  • Training or experience in medical, oncology, prenatal, or palliative massage
  • Experience working with medically complex, fragile, or acutely ill individuals
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and patient-centered care
What Will Help You Thrive

You’ll be successful in this role if you bring a calm, compassionate presence to every interaction and understand that no two patients—or treatment sessions—will be exactly alike.

You should be comfortable using clinical judgment, adapting quickly, communicating with a multidisciplinary team, and providing hands-on care in an environment where patient needs can change rapidly.

Most importantly, you’ll understand that sometimes the greatest impact comes from helping someone feel more comfortable, less anxious, and cared for during a difficult moment.

This position provides care within a hospital environment, including patient rooms and clinical units. The role involves interaction with patients experiencing both acute and chronic medical conditions and requires standing, bending, and sustained physical activity while providing massage therapy.
