JOB SUMMARY

The Marketing Coordinator is responsible for supporting and enhancing the visibility, reputation, and brand of Special Olympics Kansas through strategic marketing, communications, media relations, and content development initiatives. This position combines creative storytelling, graphic design, public relations, and digital marketing expertise to develop compelling content that engages athletes, families, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community partners.

Working collaboratively across departments, the Marketing Coordinator creates and manages multimedia content, supports media outreach efforts, maintains brand consistency, and helps communicate the impact of Special Olympics Kansas programs and events throughout the state. This role serves as a key contributor to organizational awareness, audience engagement, and mission advancement through both traditional and digital communication channels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Content Development & Brand Management
  • Develop and manage engaging visual and written content across digital, print, and social media platforms.
  • Create graphics, videos, photography, infographics, presentations, and promotional materials that support organizational priorities and campaigns.
  • Ensure all communications and marketing materials align with established brand standards and messaging guidelines.
  • Assist in developing storytelling strategies that highlight athletes, volunteers, sponsors, and organizational impact.
  • Maintain consistency of voice, messaging, and visual identity across all communication channels.
Digital Marketing & Communications
  • Manage and update website content to ensure accuracy, relevance, and user engagement.
  • Support email marketing initiatives, including content development, audience segmentation, list management, and performance tracking.
  • Assist in planning and executing integrated marketing campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Monitor digital engagement metrics and provide recommendations to improve performance and audience reach.
  • Stay informed of emerging marketing, social media, and communication trends and recommend innovative approaches.
Public Relations & Media Engagement
  • Draft, edit, and distribute press releases, media advisories, newsletters, and other communications materials.
  • Support media relations efforts by coordinating interviews, responding to media inquiries, and maintaining media contact lists.
  • Assist with developing communication strategies for organizational announcements, events, and initiatives.
  • Serve as an organizational representative during media opportunities, public appearances, and community events as appropriate.
  • Help cultivate positive relationships with media outlets and community partners throughout Kansas.
Event Marketing & Organizational Support
  • Provide marketing and communications support for statewide and regional events, competitions, fundraising activities, and special initiatives.
  • Capture and develop event-related content, including photography, video, interviews, and social media coverage.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to promote programs, campaigns, and organizational priorities.
  • Assist with event marketing materials, sponsorship recognition, signage, and promotional assets.
  • Support organizational communication efforts and special projects as assigned.
Administrative & Team Collaboration
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining attention to detail.
  • Maintain marketing asset libraries, communication calendars, and project tracking tools.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, athletes, sponsors, and external partners.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and responsiveness in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & RELATED EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, or a related field.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations, content development, or a related field.
  • Experience creating content for digital and social media platforms.
  • Experience using graphic design platforms such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.
  • Experience with photography, video editing, and multimedia content creation preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Strong understanding of marketing, branding, content creation, and audience engagement strategies.
  • Experience developing compelling visual and written communications across multiple platforms.
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles, visual storytelling techniques, and brand management practices.
  • Ability to create engaging content that supports organizational goals and enhances public awareness.
  • Exceptional written, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt messaging for various audiences, platforms, and communication objectives.
  • Confidence representing the organization during media interviews, public appearances, and community engagements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems, social media management tools, and email marketing platforms.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.

The Marketing Coordinator does not have supervisory responsibilities. They will interact daily with leadership, coworkers, media, athletes, volunteers, corporate and individual donors, and the general public.

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This job requires travel locally and occasionally out-of-state, including evenings and weekends as required for events and may experience inclement weather. This role will work mostly in regulated inside climate but will also be exposed to outside climates, including extreme cold and heat. Due to the numerous responsibilities of the Special Events Coordinator, traveling time and other requirements of the position, the 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. concept of work time-frame is impossible to consider. This position, as well as other administrative staff of Special Olympics Kansas, must operate with a time-frame concept of "whatever time it takes to insure quality results".
