Market Reporter - Power

Argus Media is seeking a senior reporter to join our US Natural Gas and Power team on the North American power beat in Houston, New York City or Washington DC, working closely with team editors.

Overview

The ideal candidate is curious, passionate, personable, and able to quickly become a subject‑matter expert. You will lead coverage on news related to power markets, with a focus on emerging consumption markets such as data centers, cryptocurrency mining, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and other areas where electrification is taking hold. The role requires a collaborative approach, working in tandem with reporters on other teams.

Responsibilities

• Daily reporting on power markets and demand centers, keeping readers abreast of new projects and trends regarding the electrification of the North American economy. • Cover emerging stories such as the build‑out of artificial intelligence infrastructure, which is one of the most dynamic stories in U.S. power markets. • Cross‑train as a backup reporter on natural gas markets, which are heavily integrated into the power market. • Develop a general understanding of how power markets integrate with generation fuels (natural gas, coal, nuclear, renewables) and demand markets. • Foster relationships with key contacts, including industry stakeholders (buyers, sellers, traders, distributors) to gain market intelligence. • Interview subject‑matter experts, research industry trends, and assess the worthiness of potential topics. • Write market commentary, analysis pieces, and news stories in clear, concise language while adhering to strict deadlines. • Maintain and build databases for designated products.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree in journalism, economics, or a related field. • Prior knowledge and experience within the U.S. gas or power markets is preferred. • Advanced Excel skills. • Self‑motivation and initiative to drive projects forward and meet tight deadlines. • Strong writing ability, intelligence, curiosity, and a real desire to become a journalist. • No prior experience in commodities markets is required.
