Markel Corporation in Los Angeles is seeking a technically minded developer to join a small team building AI‑assisted underwriting tools. You’ll turn documents into clean data, connect systems via APIs, and automate workflows used by underwriters to price risks and produce quotes.
You’ll work with Python/JS, explore large datasets, and help design prompts for language models while ensuring secure, compliant access across Markel’s cloud platform.
What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it. The work we do at Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities, and you’ll find your fit amongst our global community of optimists and problem-solvers. We’re always pushing each other to go further because we believe that when we realise our potential, we can help others reach theirs. Join us and play your part in something special! Underwriters, claims handlers and operations teams at Markel spend hours on work a computer can do well: reading broker emails, keying the same data into two systems, checking documents against rules and rebuilding quote letters by hand. We build working tools that take that work off their plate—AI‑assisted underwriting workbenches, automated email flows and links between the systems people already use. We move quickly and we build for real people. A typical project goes from a conversation with a business leader to a working proof of concept in days. Then we test it, harden it and hand it over. You'll join as the second person on this work, so you'll learn fast and see your work in use early. Along the way you'll learn how specialty insurance runs and how to put AI to work safely inside a regulated business.
Pay information: The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary range for the position is $24-$28.50/hr.
