Job summary

Markel is recruiting for an Underwriter Trainee program designed to develop risk analysis and decision-making skills. You will interact with underwriting management, product line leaders, colleagues, and data analysts, preparing you for an underwriting position after training.

We seek a college graduate with strong academics, presentation and leadership abilities, and readiness to work in a dynamic insurance environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree completed or expected by June 2027.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and make sound recommendations in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop skills to review, analyze, accept and decline risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
  • Communicate with underwriting management, product line leaders, colleagues, data analysts, and current and proposed producers.
  • Become familiar with underwriting guidelines, policies and procedures; participate in data analytics and digital technologies.

Communicate with underwriting management, product line leaders, colleagues, data analysts, and current and proposed producers. Become familiar with and execute upon underwriting guidelines, policies and procedures. Additionally trainees will be exposed to data analytics and digital technologies that focus on the future of underwriting in the insurance industry. Upon satisfactory completion of training the underwriter trainee will be eligible for an underwriting position.

What We're Looking For:
  • College graduate as of June 2027;
  • Strong academic performance (3.00 GPA minimum), excellent presentation and leadership skills;
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to analyze and reason through complex problems and make sound recommendations in a fast-paced environment;
  • High energy self-starter, good decision maker with an entrepreneurial spirit;
  • Solid time management skills;
  • Computer savvy- experience with MS office suite;
  • Competitive nature and strong desire to win;

Pay Information

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary range for the position is $34-$45/hr. with a 15% bonus potential.
