Job summary

Management & Training Corporation (MTC) seeks a QMED-Oiler Instructor to lead maritime engineering instruction at Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, OR. You will deliver USCG-aligned curricula, supervise hands-on training, and serve as Chief Engineer on training vessels during underway sessions with students.

Responsibilities include mentoring students, assessing progress, maintaining labs and simulators, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance across training activities.

Qualifications

  • Chief Engineer – Unlimited License: Valid national or international Chief Engineer certification.
  • STCW Certification: STCW endorsement for engineering, including safety.
  • Sea Experience: Extensive sea service in engineering roles, typically Chief Engineer.
  • Knowledge of Maritime Regulations: Familiarity with national and international regulations.
  • Medical Fitness Certificate: Up-to-date medical certificate for sea duty.
  • Leadership and Management Training: Certification in maritime leadership/management.
  • Teaching or Training Certification: USCG Train the Trainer qualification.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification: Current first aid, CPR, maritime readiness.
  • New hires will join the union for health/retirement benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum delivery: Design lessons and practicums that adhere to USCG curriculum.
  • Instruction and Training: Teach classes, lead practical exercises, and oversee hands-on training.
  • Chief Engineer on Tongue Point training vessels during underway sessions 1-2 times per week.
  • Manage and mentor engineering students, ensuring curriculum adherence.
  • Student Assessment: Evaluate progress, provide feedback, and assess competency.
  • Laboratory and Workshop Maintenance: Oversee lab equipment, simulators, and workshops.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure training and facilities meet maritime safety standards.
  • Professional Development: Stay current with industry practices and certifications.
  • Collaboration with Maritime Industry: Build relationships with stakeholders for real-world alignment.
  • Administration and Reporting: Manage schedules, records, and regulator reporting.
  • Advisory Role: Guide students on career pathways, licensure, and expectations.
