Job summary

Illinois Marine Towing is seeking a Marine Superintendent to provide operational leadership for the wheelhouse and ensure seamless vessel moves and logistics. You will plan, communicate, and supervise crew, trains, and safety programs while representing IMT with customers and industry groups.

The role requires 5–7 years of supervisory experience, a Master of Towing License, and knowledge of USCG regulations. You will coordinate with captains, crewing, and management to meet customer requirements.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years of progressive supervisory experience.
• Must be safety conscious, detail-oriented, and a good communicator.
• Marine transportation experience preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to build strong relationships with vessel captains, customers and crewing.
• Strong computer skills.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and situations simultaneously.

• Ability to be self-managed while working effectively as a team.
• Knowledge of USCG regulations.

Responsibilities

• Assist vessel moves to optimize use of equipment and resources and coordinate with docks and barge customers.
• Understand boat procedures and Vessel Emergency Response Plan.
• Investigate incidents and implement future solutions to prevent recurrence.
• Inform management of vessel and crew trends and performance.
• Review and approve assignments and promotions.
• Lead team efforts to improve department capabilities and success.
• Advocate for wheelhouse personnel and ensure management-employee needs are met.
• Guide wheelhouse staff in navigation, dispatch orders, and safety matters.
• Maintain positive employee relations and communications.
• Develop skills, leadership, and training of licensed mariners.
• Lead weekly crew change training; conduct classroom leadership training.
• Bridge vessel and office between units; ensure captain accountability.
• Represent IMT in industry groups and regulatory committees.

Job Description

MARINE SUPERINTENDENT

I. BASIC FUNCTION

The major function of this position is to provide operational leadership for IMT Wheelhouse. This role will also be expected to ensure that Illinois Marine Towing logistics and vessel operations always operate seamlessly by providing proactive planning, communication, management, and incident prevention to fulfill customer requirements.

II. Key Responsibilities

• Assist vessel moves to ensure efficient use of company equipment and resources; monitor traffic that boats produce; and communicate with docks and other barge customers to coordinate moves.
• Understand boat procedures and Vessel Emergency Response Plan.
• Investigate, review, and provide disciplinary action and future solutions where required for all vessel and personnel incidents and accidents.
• Inform management of vessel and vessel personnel trends and performance.
• Review, evaluate, approve and recommend assignments and promotions.
• Work as a team to continually improve the overall abilities of the department and continued success of Illinois Marine Towing.
• Be the spokesman for the wheelhouse personnel, advocate for their concerns and leadership to ensure that all needs are being met from both management as well as employees.
• Respond and guide wheelhouse personnel in areas of navigation, dispatch orders, CEMS, and safety when necessary.
• Establish and maintain positive employee relations and communications with entire workforce.
• Assist in development of skills, leadership, and professional training of licensed mariners.
• Provide presence at all weekly crew change training meetings, conduct classroom training as pertains to leadership and policy information.
• Bridge the gap between the vessels and the office. Ensure accountability is being maintained by captains as the manager of their vessel.
• Represent IMT interest in industry groups and on regulatory committees.

Other

• Perform other duties as required and directed by management.
• Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and mission of Canal Barge Company and Illinois Marine Towing.

III. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

The Marine Superintendent reports to the General Manager of Illinois Marine Towing. The Marine Superintendent will provide daily supervision to the Crewing Department and all vessel personnel.

IV. Education & Qualifications

• 5-7 years of progressive supervisory experience.
• Must be safety conscious, detail-oriented, good communicators, and be able to accomplish work tasks independently.
• Marine transportation experience preferred.
